raising concrete floor of sunken shower

I'm remodeling a bathroom with a sunken shower and I would like to raise the shower floor to the level of the rest of the bathroom. The bathroom floor is poured concrete. The shower basin is poured concrete on 3 walls and concrete block on one wall. I'm thinking of raising the drain, then filling the basin with gravel and pouring a new concrete floor on top. My question is whether the new concrete can be effectively bonded to the existing floor (using rebars or other means) so that I can tile the entire floor without having cracks migrate through the tile. I'd also be open to other means of raising the floor if there are suggestions. Thanks for your help!

Before and after we raised the plumbing and the floor under the tub. I'll have to ask my husband to try to remember exactly how we ended up doing this. If I recall correctly, we just poured a concrete floor after the plumber raised the drain line.

I would be concerned enough to ask him for more details as to why he gave you that guidance. Can he explain his thought process, or provide building codes for your areas that would demonstrate his reasoning. Repost with what he says; then if his advice turns out to not be right you probably need to work with someone else. that being said, curbless showers are still pretty new so if this is a contractor you like and trust and has other good experience, then you might still go with him. My contractor is my stepbrother and I knew he would do an excellent job, as he had done alot of work on my Mom's house and the quality was excellent. Plus, he would have heard about it every Xmas, Thanksgiving, etc if he messed up the job. But, curbless was new to him...still I had confidence that he could learn how to do them and do a good job...and he did.

We did this about 18 months ago. DH says he believes the cost was $2200 labor and materials, not including what was done to the fireplace (different folks). We're in a high cost area (SF). This is the original: This is after the fireplace and hall tile were removed by the masonry guys: Rug out and floor joints in. Buy seasoned used lumber for joists and have tile installer bridge between different floors with urathane caulk. Tape is applied bridging gap then urathane applied over tape. The idea is tape come's loose to slide to and fro while urathane adheare's only to sides of tile and stretche's x contract's with movements. Urathane come's in colors close enough to basic tile colors. To view example of urathane,look for parking garage expansion joints,filled gap between commercial buildings and sidewalk,brick/stone wall expansion joints and other masonary work. Even if the low room were filled with concrete the joint will have uneven movement and never be fit for normal tile. Think about required expansion joints in concrete mentioned above. Many wood floors snap togeather and float,have a look at those.

Well, presuming you were going to cover everything with new flooring or carpet, you could put appropriate size framing in the hole, attach the perimeter of it to the existing concrete, and cover it with something solid, like tongue-in-groove 1-1/8" plywood. I had something similar done on a smaller scale when I remodeled my master bath and removed a large sunken tub. The contractor framed out the hole and screwed down underlayment to bring it up to the level of the rest of the floor. Worked fine....

Hello all, I came across this post while also searching for ideas to remodel our 1970’s sunken tub . . . I’d love to hear how your projects came out if you would be willing to share. We have lived with the world’s worst master bath for seven years now and are excited about taking a shower in a non-sunken tub 😂

Hello everyone,

I'm remodeling a sunken shower here in Florida. The house is on a concrete slab, and the shower is sunken into the slab. The dimensions are 70" L x 35" W x 10" D (17 SQ FT). I'm thinking of just extending the drain and pouring concrete with no rebar.
