Bad PH levels?
Comments (3)In the past I have used a glass bulb pH meter for soil pH testing, but over time I found out that indicator dye solutions are accurate enough for growing blueberries, so now that is the method I use. About one teaspoon of dirt is mixed with enough distilled water to make a slurry, and the mixture is then filtered, to give a reasonably clear sample. A few drops of bromocresol green indicator is added. If the sample is blue, pH is around 5.4, and if the sample turns yellow, the pH is around 3.8. A green sample means the pH is around 4.6, and this is close to ideal for blueberries. There are other indicator solutions available, if you need to test a different pH range....See MoreHow bad is it if our water nitrate level is high and RO is needed
Comments (7)Well, I'm not an expert, but it is entirely possible that the builder did not know there were high nitrate levels until the well was in & the water was sent for testing. To his credit, he did install the RO system, but putting it out there like it was a bonus of some sort vs. a necessity & required by the health department was not kosher. My question would be why are there high levels of nitrates in the water? Is there a cattle/horse farm nearby? Has someone been dumping human waste? Is there a farm that uses alot of fertilizer next door or nearby where the well water could be getting contaminated from runoff? Is there a problem with the well that has caused these high nitrate levels? They do make whole house nitrate filters. If it was me, I would definitely get one. I would even see if the builder would pay for it. We didn't have nitrates in our well water, but we did have high levels of iron (and we even had a cattle farm bordering 2 sides of our property). We dealt with budgetwater.com for our iron filter. They were easy to deal with & it worked like a charm. We sent them a sample of the water to test first--we knew there was iron due to the orange stains developing in the commodes and appearing on our clothes. Just to make sure they weren't pulling a fast one on the testing, I had a local pool supply company that offered water testing also run the tests and they came back with pretty much the same results on all the "contaminants" (iron, nitrates, chlorine, etc)--basically we just had an iron problem. If nothing else, their website has a lot of good information. Good luck to you! Comments (43)My neighbor recently had her kitchen redone. She had granite counters installed. The problem with the counters was that her counters followed an L shape and the short side of the L had different height cabinets than the long side of the L. This happened because she had a cooktop and under counter oven installed and the KD did not allow enough room in the oven cabinet for the proper clearance under the oven and the proper clearance between the cooktop and the oven. Prior to counter top install, but after templating, the oven was installed, but a filler strip was added to the top and bottom of the cabinet holding the cooktop and the oven. This raised the counter top 1.5 inches. The company installing the counters was not aware of this until they came to install the countertops. Lo and behold, they dry fitted the counters and noticed the height difference. The solution was to add filler to the other side. It isn't noticeable unless she points it out. The filler matches her cabinets and the counters are level. She is only 5'3" and states that she actually like the slightly higher counters as it makes it easier for her do do everyday tasks. She loves the kitchen and a situation similar to yours, except with the same material of countertop, resolved. Longs way to make a point, I know, but could you place filler strip under the cabinet with the lower counter to raise it level? Do door need to match the cabinets on either side? I notice in one of the posted photos that the doors aren't level and the toe kicks aren't either.........See Moreartemis_ma
