What are some things that you did or wish you did to stay on budget?
Comments (2)Focus your budget on features or materials that would be hard/impossible/expensive to add to your home after it's built. So, expand the foundation by that 2' now so the kitchen (or garage or family room or whatever) is roomy enough for the long haul. Get really good quality windows, not the no-name junk mass builders buy in bulk, even if it means keeping the budget in check by selecting a lesser counter top material for the kitchen now. And, so on......See MoreDreams vs budget - what did you give up....
Comments (48)We are smack dab in the middle of our kitchen remodel. When my contractor first came out to discuss my plans, he listened politely until I told him I wanted to add a window between uppers and lowers so that I could see out to the E, not just S and SW... He looked at me, waited a minute, and said, "And just why do you think that is so important?" He knows me well, and that comment made me laugh, and really decide just what was important, and what were really pie in the sky ideas. 35 years ago, when we first moved our house to our farm and began improving it, I immediately began dreaming of a major kitchen remodel. I had plans to blow out a wall, take in a porch, and add a lot more square footage. We did widen the original 3' opening to 7' to access our breakfast nook, which began life as a porch. 18 years ago, we replaced the original cabinets with inexpensive yet custom ones to last until the "big" remodel.... which is now happening. And now, retired, I find that what I dreamed and planned for all those years was good for entertainment and learning of all the choices available, but was not what I truly needed, and especially not what I wanted to spend money on. No walls are coming down, but money is being spent to upgrade electrical and add additional lighting, A local cabinet maker/childhood friend of our children, will be installing natural hickory cabinets next week. I found granite at a local yard for $20-$30 less than exotic granite or quartz would cost. Original v joint paneling removed from behind the cabinets has been recycled into a built in banquette for the breakfast nook. I saw some beautiful tiles that were over $30 a square foot, nixed them, and found some that will be just as lovely for under $10. A new slide in range is the only appliance purchase.... my old one is 17 years old, and I love the idea of keeping gunk from getting between the range and cabinets. Yes, the final results will be quite different from what I once dreamed of having, and I know for me, that's a very good thing. At this stage in life, I refuse to compromise by spending over my budget. There are trips my DH and I need to take while we can, and horses I need to care for. Knowing I kept remodeling costs under control allows me to do those things, and that brings me great joy....See MoreWould you trim appliance budget to get better cabinets?
Comments (157)IMO it's a personal decision that wouldn't be the same for everyone. I didn't read every response, so excuse me if this isn't all relevant to your question anymore. Looks are incredibly important to me, but I think I'd go for the nicer appliances. For me, if I have nicer appliances it would make it more fun to cook. Many less expensive appliances get the job done and just as many other people don't care. I don't know what the cabinets look like that you are choosing from, but simple and plain can be elegant if done correctly, and the appliances will really pop. A simple quartz countertop can be really nice too. I looked at your quartizite as well, but you can get something just as pretty for less if you wanted. It depends on your look. In general, I'd say get more plain cabinetry and a nicer countertop, however, I'm doing the exact opposite, so go figure! We are getting horizontal planking on our cabinetry with grain, so I decided a quiet countertop would actually look best. I found a solid white marble with no veining that is less than quartzite. I realize marble isn't for everyone. I think, depending on your design, a solid white quartz can be beautiful too. I just went to a friends house who had the most plain white cabinets and countertops and I thought it was stunning in it's simplicity. But, of course it depends what else is going on in your room. If I were changing some of the appliances, I'd personally keep the range and d/w, and then maybe downgrade the hood and fridge. the first two have a lot of function that you might notice more than just ever so slightly more smells or a different layout in the fridge)...See MoreDo you find the more you stay home the more you want to stay home?
Comments (29)We've been splitting our time 50/50 between Los Angeles and our house in Cathedral City (Palm Springs are), and we have nice, large outdoor spaces at both houses. I would like to have people over, but I don't mind staying in our houses for this period. I miss going to fabric stores. We have so much to do at both houses - much of it maintenance - that we do not run out of things to do. I think I prefer the house in CC because it has a pool, but it is a bit expensive to heat the pool in the dead of winter. It's no more expensive than cooling that house in the summer, however. We have bikes at both houses and go for bike rides whenever we want, although I will not ride my bike in CC in the summer - I just spend more time in the pool. My original plan was to rent the house in CC for additional income, and so our budget is stretched pretty thin now. Cathedral City put a moratorium on short term vacation rentals one week after we closed on that house, and so we haven't been able to rent it anyway. We're very glad to have it as a safe get-away, since not only are we prevented from air travel - we cannot afford it at this time. There are lots of places for us to go for hikes or mountain biking in southern California, and so there's always that. I stopped going to the beach on a regular basis when we moved from Venice to Westchester in 2009, and I do miss that a bit, but it's still there. However, I will not be going back to the Venice boardwalk until the pandemic is over. To answer the question: No, I do not find that the more I stay at home the more I want to. I definitely want to get out, but I'm not climbing the walls and am reasonably content....See Moremaven19
