anyone starting seeds yet?
Comments (14)My impatiens are germinating Woo Hoo! Took 3 1/2 days. 600 plants total, from my own seed stock that I harvested. (I always play it safe when harvesting so I have thousands of extra seeds left over if anyone wants some - not too late to start them. Email me if interested, but act soon.) I haven't purchased impatiens seeds for six years now. I also have seeded 100 misc. hot peppers, 100 misc. early herbs for containers, 50 misc. eggplant, along with celery, celeriac, parsley root, leek, and early tomatoes for container growing. None of these are germinating yet that I am aware of, but most were only planted two or three days ago. Shouldn't be too long for most of them, though. Next up today is to seed some early cabbage, cauli, and broccoli for the spring garden, along with cotton, ornamental alliums, and other miscellaneous perennial flowers. Then I will have a breather for a couple of weeks before starting tomatoes, sweet peppers, and common annual bedding flowers such as petunias, marigolds, coleus, etc. I caught the spring fever badly now that I have the smell of wet soil in my nostrils. :)...See MoreAnyone started making X-mas wreaths yet...........
Comments (33)Bucky you haven't burned up yet? How is the orchard? Good to see you on the forums still! We have been making dogwood wreaths for about 1 month, dogwood stars for 3 weeks, rosehip wreaths for 3 weeks, boxwood/rosehip squares for about 2 weeks, christmas wreaths were started about 2 weeks ago. Next up this next week is curly willow. 1985 when we first started making wreaths seems so long ago. We used a wrap form to wrap them. REF machines and rings: I have used Kelco it is nice, but very expense. Mitchell's machine is the cheapest, but it only has the clamper and wreath material comes lose often. The best machine in my opnion is the the wreath master from maple ridge supply, it has a clamper and arm that comes over and makes the wreath very tight. I have 3, a guy making wreaths about 35 miles from me has 4 and a guy that we trade with in CA has 2. They really are the best. Now to rings... Maple used to buy and resell Mitchell's rings. Here are the 4 that I have used: Maple ridge good but resells, Mitchell's usually the best price unless you are buying a pallet of 4,800 on a 10 clamp pallet. Cherokee the best price in the US that I know of, BUT you need to buy a pallet! Oregon wire is nice if you like them painted already or vinyl, but they are expensive. For christmas wreaths we are using douglas and sub alpine fir, juniper, rosehips, incease cedar, port orford cedar and pine cones. Wholesale prices have dropped to around $1 a clamp the lowest in years. Stars are more money of course we are charging $15 for a 10 clamp 4' star made of dogwood. Those of you only making a few may I suggest going to your nearest green waste facility or dumps. We by a forest service bough permit. It is .10 a pound and we cut boughs off the lower branches of the trees. The biggest problem we have is cutting or getting enough material for 3 wreath makers it takes 2 to 3 truck loads a day. Our bundles usually make 5 to 7 wreaths a bundle. Right now a 10 clamp wreath is selling for $10 to $11 wholesale and $15 to $18 retail. Good luck to all. With the economy we have seen wreath sells drop and wholesalers wanting 60 to 90 days to pay. With $10,000 of wreaths it gets difficult to pay labor, gas, and rings upfront. Comments (26)Hello everyone! I am so excitied to read this post because I loved to starts grow seeds indoor and sit underlight! I think it is so fun doing it. Yes.. I had good luck with my daylilies seeds. I got those seeds last year and keep daylilies seeds in box and stored in ice box for a year! Then.. I wrapped seeds in damped loose paper towels and put them back in ziplock bags with named crossed. Then I put the ziplock bags in big plastic peanut butter jar and sitting on top of water heat tank until they sprouted. It takes one to two weeks. Depends on seeds! Then I planted sprouted seeds in good soil in 16oz. foam cups and sitting underlight. There is several different way to start grow daylily seeds. I got some daylily seeds from my girl friend who crossed her daylilies in AL. Hey James!!! Yes.. Yes.. the petunia seeds are soo tiny seeds. DO NOT COVER SOIL! Just try easy shake petunia seeds out of package and sit on top of Jiffy-7 and spray with warm water and then put Jiffy-7 in the tupperware lid and then sit on heating mat until sprouted. I planted Jiffy-7 in 16oz foam cups and sit underlight. I ordered Petunia Dolcissima Flambe from Park's Seed Co. I wish I know how to post pictures of babies. James..Can I send you email (pictures of babies) and you can post picture to show guys on the thread? Christie! Yes.. I ordered seeds and then recieved those seeds in few days! I was so surprised how fast they send me seeds. Now they are fat so babies! Have a fun!! Kat...See MoreAnyone starting seeds indoors yet?
Comments (11)I started 13 seed trays this weekend. I stole, er, um, borrowed one of DH's wire storage reacks out of the garage and set it up in the kitchen and filled it up with trays of those little peat pellets. I'm using a heating pad with 15-minute automatic shutoff under the tomato seeds to provide a little extra warmth. I had to place it in front of a North-facing window because we have such a long porch overhang on the east side. I have grow lights going over the trays except, the shelf is 3' wide and the grow lights come in 2' or 4 feet lengths. Aaarrhghghg!!!!! I'm suffering the "10 hotdogs and 8 buns" syndrome. Need I even mention that the 4 footers are not twice as much as the 2 footers, oh, no, they're more like 4 times the cost. Oh, well, for better or for worse, I started seeds this weekend. I also started cleaning out my vegetable garden beds and cleaned out my tool shed, planted a few cannas and daylilies, and sorted out my seeds in preparation for the Spring Swap at Forest Park in Fort Worth.
