Bosch 500 series dishwasher noise

I have the Bosch SHP65T55UC dishwasher, purchased in April 2015. It's supposed to be a silent 44db dishwasher but I've been hearing the blades spinning and the water sloshing around. The water sound doesn't bother me too much but the blades spinning gets a bit annoying. It's definitely not hitting against anything. I measured the decibels using an app on my phone and it's measuring in the 60s-70s.

Is this normal? I am using Finish tabs with the red power ball in the center.

I have a SH7PT55UC. Occasionally I hear water draining or gurgling but no sound from spinning blades. I don't think that is normal neither is the 60-70 decibles. I have not measured the decibles but it is extremely quiet.

70 db is pretty loud. It is equal to a vacuum cleaner running. Are you sure it's that loud? Also how close did you have your phone to the dishwasher?

I bought an SHE55M last year during a July 4th sale for a lot less than $800. (The pecuiliarities of holiday pricing being what they were, the white model I bought was only $50 more than one in the Ascenta line.) It replaced a 15-year0old Bosch 3xxx series. One of the reasons I got the SHE55M was that I do not care for top-mounted controls. I like having them on the face of the dishwasher door and also having a count-down timer. Preferences on this vary, so there are varieties of choices on this. The new one is noticably quieter than the old one, which was pretty quiet to begin with. Not silent when it drains, mind, but not obtrusively noisy, either. One thing you want to do with any new dishwasher is make sure that you have the kick paneling installed correctly and the DW positioned at the proper depth beneath the counter. Getting those rimming gasket/flaps and the kick-panel set properly will be key to controlling noise on any brand of DW. (There were threads about this last fall.) Cycle times are slightly slower than the old one. Old one ran about 95 minutes, usually. For the SHE55M, CR reported 110 minutes but mine usually runs between 98 and 102 minutes. Its the turbidity sensor than controls running time. Apparently, my dw water is less turbid than CR's. The new one loads differently than the old Bosch, which was similar to every other dw I had used previously except that it had a large flatware basket. The 500 series has a basket that can be two narrower baskets that link together on their narrow ends and hook to the left-side of the bottom rack. Or, the baskets be folded together as a wider basket and positioned elsewhere on the bottom rack. Bottom rack tines can fold down in a variety of ways. For me, the 500 Series racks have more capacity for dinnerware and glasses, and more flexibility in loading, too. Might be me particular dinnerware. I will say that it took some some trial and error to figure it out. I kept the racks from the old one and have occasionally swapped in the bottom one. The old rack seems easier for loading lots of pots, for example, works really well with tall pots because the upper rack can be raised to provide added clearance.) Now that I've figured out the folding tines, though, its been months since I did the swap. Even so, not everybody likes the new rack set-up. Some find it has less capacity than racks in other brands, at least for the loads they wash. I suggest you take some of your dishes and glassware down to the store to check out loading. That exercise may tell you more than we can.

Well, I've found that after the appliance stores calling me weekly to see if I'm "ready to order" that they seem really desperate for sales. This gave me the courage to basically give them my list and tell them what I wanted to pay for each item. Without blinking, the guy (from reputable store) said "I can do that". If figured what's the worst that can happen? They say no. OTOH, I ordered my plumbing fixers from same store (different salesperson) and I did need to email her any online prices for her to match. (The appliance guy didn't request this, which is good b/c my prices were lower than what I could find online for the most part). Amazing that on plumbing fixtures I saved about $1400 from what they were originally going to sell them to me for -- oh, supposedly that was builder pricing- yeh, right! My Kohler sink they quoted me $750 builders pricing. Online I found it for $505 at ONE store online plus $60 shipping. The store sold it to me for $505 and didn't even make me take into account that if I bought online I'd have to pay an extra $60 for shipping. This happened on about 7 or 8 items. Bottom line, you may not be as lucky but I think the stores are really wanting to sell product and would rather sell it at a lower price if they aren't losing money than not get a sale at all! The sales people actually THANKED me for giving them the chance to match and not just buying online! The plus is that if I have any issues now I have a very reputable store my GC is used to dealing with and I don't have to be shipping sinks, etc back if they are damaged. Good luck!

Umm, do you think maybe you've been been spending too much time trying to pick a dishwasher? A bit more research will tell you that Bosch specs the 500 series dishwashers at 46 dbA and that some of the 300 series are rated at 48 dbA and others at 50 dbA. If that seems reassuring, you may be afflicted by spec fatigue. These differences are measurable but minor. Maybe if you were planning to have them in a bedroom next to your bed and wanting them to run while you slept next to them, then sound levels might be noticceable. But really, for most folks, the noise is not a disruptive kind of sound and not very noticceable when you are not down ot the floor with your ears next to the door trying to suss out differences. Also, except for the short final draining, Bosch dw noise is all pretty much unobtrusive white noise. I can tell that my new 46 dbA 500 series dw is a bit quiter than the 15 year-old 52 dbA Bosch that was replaced. But the old onw was hardly obtrusively noisy. I did not replace the old one because of noise but because the timer/controller died and I could not readily find a replacement part. That was a month ago, What I remember from that shopping episode was that the significant difference between the 500 series and 300 series came down this one thing for me: the tubs for the 500 series are entirely stainless steel while the 300 series tubs have polypropylene plastic bottoms with the rest being stainless steel. As I recall, there were three other differencees that I can recall: the 500 series dishwashers have a small electronic display window (countdown of minutes left in the run), they have a delay start function, and their outside dimensions are, maybe, 7/8-inch less deep. Some folks might find these important. For me, these three were trivial. If those differences are not important to you, and if you are okay with a polypro tub bottom, save yourself $90 and get a 300 series with a panel door. A month ago, when I bought my new dishwasher, the 500 series were only about $90 more than their analogues in the 300 series line.

We have a Bosch 500 Nexxt and I will probably never buy another front loader again. Had a Maytag before. My main issue is that the manufacturers are so eat up with saving water that I don't feel that the clothes are getting clean. I dump a couple of extra gallons of water in each load & the clothes are now cleaner (sweat smells). Mechanically the Bosch is a fine unit - we have had no issues in the last 4 years. I have tried all recommendations about detergent, amount thereof and so forth. The only thing that helped was adding extra water.

I had my phone about a foot away from the dishwasher. Perhaps it is not as loud as a vacuum cleaner but I can certainly hear it while my tv is on about 20 feet away.

I have an 800 series which I think is rated the same (or maybe 42db). Like ifoco, occasionally I hear water gurgling or draining. I've never heard a part moving, so it sounds like something is wrong. Most of the time, I don't even know it's running unless I see the light on the floor.

Okay, good to know. Well, I have a repairman coming out today to look at my Bosch double wall oven for uneven baking so I'll have him take a look at my dishwasher too.

If I recall correctly, the DW used to be silent too.. but it's been a few weeks/months since I've started hearing the noise, and I usually run it while I'm sleeping, so I'm not sure if I'm just imagining up things.

Your are not imagining things. DWs will get a bit noiser over time. 70dB seems unduly loud, though, especially for a DW that is less than a year old.

For a unit less than a year old, though, I'd be inclined to check the soundproofing aids. From experience with my current, 4 y.o. 500 series Bosch DW, I'd suggest checking for gaps in the soundproofing flaps on the sides and along top. Opening and closing the door can slowly skooch the DW a bit out of alignment with the cabinet, and lthat can leave gaps. Also, the flaps are plastic. They might deform a bit and not seal as well as they did originally. If gaps develop, these things will not do as good a job at containing the operating noise.

I've also read some older posts here that water spray noise can increase if bits of food get into the blades/arms and plug a couple of the spray holes. Seems to be pretty easy to dismount the arms and check for that.

What kind of app were you using? I recently tried two popular dB measuring apps - one rated my hair dryer 69 dB... the other one 120 dB.

I ran my Bosch removed out of the cabinets and it must have been below 60 dB. Maybe something is caught somewhere?

What cycle are you using? Some of the quick cycles run the pump at top speed to make the spray harder to compensate for a shorter wash time.

I was using the Auto cycle. The repairman was here and said he would just order me a new spray arm unit for the upper rack and will replace for me.
