Heart scare
Comments (19)I don't think you need scary stories as much as some upbeat and positive reinforcement that a healthier lifestyle isn't about self-sacrifice and boring hard work. Who could enthusiastically welcome the prospect of a lifetime of that? It takes most of a lifetime to arrive at your situation. It was acquired in moderation over time, and can be solved in moderation over time. Yes, stick to your physician's recommendations, but don't look at it like a prison sentance so much as a challenge. And it should be a holistic approach. You mentioned stress and that is a contributor to your eating and activity habits, and is of itself being associated with cardiac and endocrine problems. So, I'd suggest you might want to address that issue as well. Find an aerobic activity you enjoy. I personally do not know one person who has purchased a treadmill or home exercise machine who has stuck with it long-term. When I had a more sedentary job, I participated in alternate speed walking/sprinting, year round lap swimming and hit the universal at the Y on a regular basis. That's what I enjoyed so I looked forward to it and it wasn't a chore. Your wonderful cosmopoliton selection of foods?........OMG......... You gotta know that in that mix are a lot of healthy choices. And that in moderation even those 'not so healthy' ones can be consumed if you don't do it on a regular basis. If your diet becomes drugery, you won't stick to it. And I know from experience that people who live by themselves are very tempted to do the grab and run routine. Plan your meals as if you were preparing them for company, even if that means fixing ahead on your days off and freezing portion sized amounts. Also take with a grain of salt any studies when they say statistics "suggest" anything. I've lived long enough to see many of them be reversed 180 degrees. The human body and its processes are never that simple, and are in interplay of many variables coming together. In the case of cholesterol, the majority of it is produced in your own body. If your general health is not up to par, limiting your dietary consumption of it (although necessary) may not be sufficient of itself to keep it at desirable levels. Consumption of other foods high in sugar or alcohol feed into your cholesterol levels too as they impact the liver and that is the organ producing it. Good Luck on your new lifestyle. You will succeed if you look on it as an excellent and potentially enjoyable adventure....See MoreHelp! I've got spring fever! I've been ordering . . .
Comments (34)Brenda, it is nice when even family members are enablers, eh? LOL!! I actually keep telling my husband "There's this garden in Western NY that someday we have to go visit!" I would love to see your beautiful garden some day. The different areas you have planted and the variety is amazing. I've been lusting for some more photos from you. Would love to see what you have on file for your veggie garden from last year if you have any time to post some. Goodness! I finally cracked open the catalog for my local nursery who I really like to support. She's a true plantswoman who I so enjoy chatting with, etc. I just sent an email over to her with my "list" (is was a long one) of plants to put aside for me for pickup when they open. It's a terrible habit I have of giving her a list each year for pickup. But my birthday is always right around when she opens, so it's a birthday present, right?!?! LOL!...See MoreAll the symptoms I've experienced!!!!!
Comments (34)I'm 54 and have had quite severe menopausal symptoms since I had a partial hysterectomy (due to a fibroid the size of a grapefruit) at age 48. Since then, there were a few times I thought I was going to die from weird symptoms. This year my chronic headaches have evolved into a number of episodes with severe migraines. For years I've not been able to get a full night's sleep without a mild tranquilizer. The good news is that I have the support of a naturopathic doctor in addition to my family physician. I've been exercising regularly which has helped my arthritis symptoms immensely. My tolerance to caffeine is currently nil, so I opt for herbal tea. I suffer from anxiety and depression and I'm learning to turn my ANTS into CATS (automatic negative thinking into constructive automatic thinking) ...it takes time to re-train the brain. Guided meditation is also helpful - there's lots available on the Net. I do not respond well to any type of stress (coping with daily life is a challenge) but I refuse to take hormone replacement therapy. Instead I opt for herbal supplements such as ashwagandha, rhodiola and 5-HTP. Hot flushes are the least of my issues, but I admit waking up with a full-body sweat in the middle of the night is no fun at all. In addition to all this nonsense, I have food sensitivities and therefore, avoid highly processed foods. Also, I'm on a high protein diet and have vitamin B-12 injections once per week. Evidently, hope exists....See MoreSo I've been thinking about my no vent problem...
Comments (32)My DD informed me this morning that a long stretch of counter at the back of the kitchen would look "weird" and just get covered with stuff, THE NERVE! It's like she knows me or something. It's weirder to have a long, useful counter cut in two by a vertical element. Show her the NKBA guidelines--a budding kitchen designer is never too young to learn. ;) Guideline #3 (In part): A major appliance and its surrounding landing/work area form a work center. The distances between the three primary work centers (cooking surface, clean-up/prep primary sink, and refrigeration storage) form a work triangle. Guideline #4: A full-height, full-depth, tall obstacle should not separate two primary work centers. (Examples of a full-height obstacle are a tall oven cabinet, tall pantry cabinet, or refrigerator) If the oven cabinet is directly adjacent to the fridge, it becomes part of that work center--you move items from the fridge to the counter beside the ovens, then have a clear field to the cooktop. That long counter would be useful for staging baking trays for making cookies, lining up and landing multiple dishes going to/from the ovens for large holiday meals, and assembling school and work lunches....See Moregjcore
