How many Containers did you sow this year??
Comments (14)I skipped a year of winter sowing last year and I really missed it. The most I ever winter sowed was close to 200 containers the year before. This year I think I did about 50 containers. Then I sowed seeds indoors under lights, because the warm season vegetables just started to produce so late when I winter sowed them. I don't have a full sun situation anyway so that just adds to my problems. I planned on doing some spring sowing of the warm weather annuals etc, but so far, I've not been able to, so I direct sowed some zinnia, marigold and alyssum yesterday. I would have had more containers by now, otherwise. Right now everything has been outside for a few days since it warmed up. It was 80 here yesterday and 70 the day before, and HUMID...! I'm very glad I decided to do tomatos, eggplant, and pepper under lights because none of my winter sown have germinated. I'm happy to only have 50 containers to plant out, but I did have to winnow down the list. I can always think of a ton of seed to sow. I do try to pace myself though....See MoreHow many kids did you get last night?
Comments (39)First of all, I can't believe that Annie got FOUR HUNDRED KIDS!!! That just blows my mind! What's in the water there? ;) I got none. Zilch. Nada. I was a little surprised, but not unhappy. The dogs I have now go ballistic when someone comes to the door, so keeping them from escaping, or grabbing a child's bag of goodies is challenging. (yeah, bad Dog Mom..) So I didn't have to deal with that, and I have a whole, (well, half now...) bag of Butterfingers all to myself. jessicavanderhoff - unbelieveably, I was a kid that got *something* in their candy bar. It happened in the early 70's, and the best I can figure is that it was a little bit of LSD. I am not making this up. I had a very weird reaction to something in my candy bag. To the point where my mom called the police. I was about 13 at the time, and during their investigation, the police tried to blame it on me experimenting with drugs and getting scared. Heh. I did dabble in pot at the time, but nothing else. Something was definitely spiked. If I had children, my biggest worry would be one getting snatched on Halloween. Everyone is dressed up/disguised... it would be simple to grab a kid without being identified. I am amazed at parents that let young children roam unattended. I think the trunk or treat/community/church things are good, and as much fun as our memories of Halloween are, these types of events will be the current young generation's great memories....See MoreHow Many Books Have You Read So Far?
Comments (31)Vee - Thanks for the kudos. You're right, I do have a FT job and a DH who is, I am happy to say, much more domesticated that I am. He does the majority of the cooking/clean-up while I clean the house every day in small parts (mostly putting things away type of thing)... Plus it's lucky that DH is quite understanding about my need to read (as I have always been a big reader since he has known me), so he just goes to the back of the house and either watches tv or plays his computer games. However, we do work on spending quality time together so it all rather works out in the wash. Every now and then, a book may cross his path, but not often. It's good to have different interests... One thing that we DON"T have and a lot of people do is kids and I think that gives us a lot more freedom than otherwise......See MoreWhy did you develop a love of books and reading ?
Comments (48)Envy When I was a kid, my father, mother and my older brother used to read novels in the living room on Saturday , and I used to read cartoons. I was envious of them because it seemed to me only adults were able to read books. So from time to time I tried reading a book, there was one in particular whose cover attracted me, there were a boy and a girl and in the background a lighthouse , but every time I started reading it I got bored after a few pages. But one Christmas I was ten or eleven, an aunt of ours gave my brother quite a good present. It was a little bookcase where forty book were stored. There were all the classic ones. Little Man and…. Little Woman and… Tom Sawer , Mompracem Tigers (Sandokan) Uncle Tom’s cabin , White Fang , The Call of the Wilde, Ivanhoe, Ben Hur, Quo Vadis, Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and so on Among them there was a title that enticed me “The Paul Street Boys”. I started it and I got hooked. The story is about two young bands who are fighting for a place to play, which is owned by the Paul Street Boys, it is an old timber yard, so the other band the Red Shirts wage war on the Street Boys. First they make an agreement about the rules to follow, about who must be considered dead or caught and other ones, because there is not any meanness between them, the Red Shirts wage war because their hangout is in a botanical garden and they need a place in order to play football. The story is set in Hungary and the author is Ferenc Molnar. Of course there are other plots , but the main thread is the war. I liked it so much that once I finished I reread it eight times on a row, except the last chapter because one of main character dies of pneumonia and this made me cry a lot. Afterward I read all the other ones. This is how I started reading novels....See Moreteabooks
