We are considering all the same issues as this poster. Our fridge will be on the far left of the row of cabinets in a galley kitchen, so it seems that opening a single door left-hinge fridge will be more convenient than an FD. I also am very concerned about energy efficiency and durability, so I have some questions about how well the FD models will seal long term. I have no interest in throwing my $2000 fridge out in 5 years! We did find a GE model that seems to fit the bill: PDCS1NBWLSS GE Profile Energy Star 21.1 Cu. Ft. Stainless Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator - Left Hinged. We have not bought this yet but are still shopping around. We want a modest sized one like this (again to avoid wasting energy for space we rarely need), but there may be something similar in a larger size. Good hunting! Good luck!

Yes palimpset, we're almost to the finish line on this reno! I guess we all kind of know that appliances don't appear to be made quite as well as they used to be - however they are more energy efficient, which is a tick in the plus column. We have what I believe is close to a 25 year old simple top freezer Kenmore refrigerator in our garage that my sister in law gave us 7 years ago which holds sodas, beer, wine, extra frozen meat and Costco buys. It continues to whirr along month after month like a little champ. There are definitely more options today and we are so very lucky to have informed access to them all. As much as I love the look and feel of the French door design, for me it's just not that ergonomic unless you have your fridge in a spot that's conducive to opening /using it from the front as opposed to the sides. Also, I realized that to open the great deli drawer (which I really like) requires that both doors be opened, which in the great scheme of things is probably not all that big of a deal, but still requires one more step. That all having been said, I'm still considering the French door style, so go figure. :-)

We have the GE Profile FD and love it. It was our third new fridge in 6 weeks, as we went through two Bosch SxS models, neither of which would cool. The GE's been great...no issues at all, and because of the previous problems, I keep a fridge thermometer in it all the time...it holds its temp perfectly. We've had it for two months (admittedly, not long) and I'd give it 4.5 stars. DH insisted we had to have water in the door, so that ruled out lots of FD models. My only (small) complaint is the water well that catches drips in the door is quite small, and it sometimes overruns onto the floor when it's full and we swing the door open. But that's a small problem and infrequent. Would definitely buy it again...

This was also my concern. Plus I want a counterdepth refrigerator. There aren't many single door ones available, but I am waiting for the new KA V series single door counter depth, freezer door on the bottom to be out. Should be soon. I have talked to KA several times about it. Anyway the V series is replacing their T series and I saw the same model in the French door type and liked the freezer drawer layout and studiness better. I have a friend who hated her french door LG and had door gasket problems that reocurred so much that the the store took it back and she now has the single door freezer on the bottom. She likes that arrangement much better for the same reasons already mentioned--only open 1 door when putting something away. I just imagine going to it with a large pan that I can barely hold in one hand and then needing 2 arms to prop open the 2 french doors. I do prefer their look, but I'm in and out of the fridge too often to give up the convenience of 1 door. Anyone have the V series French Door by Kitchenaid?
