Help with Colour for Board and Batten Cottage

We just moved into our home and all the buildings need to be painted. We thought we should take the opportunity to look at different colours. Present is a sort of cream - do not know name/brand of paint they used. We were thinking either a yellow (Benjamin Moore Straw) or green (sort of sage?). Roof will eventually be a steel roof, thinking black. Looking for ideas to best suit this lakeside property, natural retreat. We have a 3 car garage, potting shed, workshop (seen on left of main house photo) and main house all to paint, so choosing the right colour is important. All buildings have wooden board and batten. House is made up of 2 parts, original cottage (bungalow) with 2 story addition on back. Thank You.

Hate the two tone. Reminds me of saddle shoes. Unless you are going to choose MANY different colors, like on a Victorian, then the two colors does nothing but chop the house in two and make it look small. Having all siding the same material and color would be the best choice. But if you have to choose to cut the house in two, because the builder insists, choose the same color, like in that last pic, but don't do board and batten. Do some type of shingle effect if you want to add a textural accent feature to the home. If you do board and batten, it should be for the whole home, not just the gable peaks.

I really like the look too. However, I wonder how difficult it is to keep it clean looking,esp. when it is painted white? With air conditioning I suppose dust isn't quite as big of a problem. I have white trim in my bedroom and a creamy white in the kitchen, and the baseboards are the worst to keep grime-free; luckily the kitchen is small so I am able to take a cleaning rag to it more frequently. The bedroom is a different story and the dust on baseboard behind furniture is a challenge because the dusting wand doesn't always do a good job without moving all the furniture out from the wall. I would love the board & batten in my library, stained.

northernester, Here are a couple of pics of our house, sorry it took me so long to get a pic, this time of year, it's leave for work in the dark, return home in the dark. The siding is Hardiboard, pre painted, in Mountain Sage, trim is Hardie Sailcloth and the windows are Eagle, in Cinnamon. The pics aren't the greatest, sadly, it looks like mud season around here when it should look like a winter wonderland. Good luck with your decision, amd you have a lovely home, a 3 car garage in a waterfront home, that's great.

I would agree with MSDG; the Hardie board and batten system is hard to beat if your going to paint and not stain. Cedar & clear redwood sidings will be the most expensive to install and maintain. Your next options would be paint grade material like Advantage (finger-jointed pine that is treated for rot and insects) which is also a good choice but I'm not sure what would be available in your area. I've also seen decent results with resawn plywood install directly over the exterior ply or OSB. The framing needs to be clean and flat but with thoughtful layout to keep the battens symetrical it can be very cost effective and clean with good primer and paint. did I say the Cedar and RW would be very expensive...
