Best toilet out there? Worst?
Comments (19)Thanks Melissa, Jle, Susanelewis, Suero and Jacobse, for your suggestions and comments. I bought my 22 yr.old house 4 years ago. No probs whatsoever with the exisiting 22 yr. old toilets. I'm having a tile floor put in the guest bath though, & was advised that now is the time to change the toilet if I think I may want to do so down the road. I hate to replace a trouble free, perfectly fine-looking toilet with something that gives me grief! I have frankly never used a plunger at this house or the at the 100 yr. old one I owned previously for 13 years which had toilets at least as old as my current ones. Have never seen a leaky toilet. Obviously, toilets have always just kind of been there in my life; a real non-issue. Now that I may need to buy one, & have started doing research, my eyes have been opened to the potential pitfalls of toilet ownership. How I yearn for the days when I never knew that a toilet could be such a troublesome loo! Nothing is simple anymore is it? Like so many things...they don't make them like they used to (for better and for worse.)...See MoreBest, Worst, & Decent online buying experiences so far...
Comments (6)Wow. Sorry to hijack the thread - that fixture really is impressive, but I can't imagine spending that much money on one fixture. Heck, I can't even imagine having so much money that I could even contemplate spending that much money on one fixture - and I wouldn't consider myself poor. More power to you, I guess. Literally. ;-) In all honesty I can't recommend an online retailer for lighting. For my infrequent replacements and upgrades, I generally trade with a large local electrical supply house, one that serves quite a few of the pros around here. Their fixtures are probably what you'd call utilitarian, but they seem to be of pretty decent quality at reasonable prices. As another thread here suggests, I've seen some truly amazing deals at garage sales and thrift stores. I guess I'm in the minority here, but I don't worry too much about having the latest fashions in lighting. I'll watch this thread for more ideas....See MoreBest of the worst hot water heater brands?
Comments (21)uscpsycho: Most of the parts on a water heater (controls, etc) are made by couple of manufacturers. Within the standard gas or electric tank water heaters much is going to be the same. Bradford White I believe is still only sold to licensed plumbers (they aren't available at Big-Box hardware, for example). Plumbers like to install them because the end customer can't see the retail cost of the unit (and the markup for the plumber). The brand has some "reputation" for quality because that's what the homeowner is told as a justification for the higher price. In addition, a professionally installed heater will generally have fewer issues overall. The point being that the hardware may not be better, but because Bradford White isn't installed by do-it-yourselfers, it can claim a reputation for better reliability. I'm reading the same issues about warranty that you are. In general my feeling about standard tank water heaters is that they are pretty much a commodity item. I've had good luck with Rheem - and a 40 gal, 12 year warranty is $560. Avoid too many bells and whistles that don't really add value (do you really need your water heater to like you on Facebook?) There are other types of water heaters - as you learned in your other post that went wildly off track (sorry about that). But I think that JRB451 is closer to right than wrong. If you start getting into condensing, or hybrid electric, or even fiberglass tanks - then things are different....See MoreRate the cabinet installer for my kitchen 1-10 1=Worst 10=Best
Comments (25)Yes that stove situation looks questionable. You could pull the stove out and install a sheet of stainless steel against the wall and behind the stove. Probably the cheapest solution. Were permits pulled? My contractor had demo crew remove old cabinetry, next crew repaired any issues and plumbing was laid out and electrical done, everything was painted and prepared for the cabinet installation. The crew from the cabinet and granite place came in and installed the cabinets, leveled and all gaps taken care of. They were perfect before the granite installation began. Different crews different trades, all aspects need permits. Touch up was done to paint etc after granite and backsplash were installed. Then floor was installed. Floor was installed under where stove goes and, fridge, and dishwasher, not under cabinets, it can be done under cabinets also, cost more for extra flooring.. I can't imagine one person doing it all except if you are doing it all yourself. But as seen on all the flip shows on TV permits are needed....See Moreleftontheinside
