Comments (35)I have heard from Macmex and they are fine and had minimal damage. Still wondering about Mulberryknob. The only thing this has to do with gardening is the fact that it involves seeds, but it was kind of funny. A few years ago George shared some hot pepper seeds with me and I plant them almost every year because Al likes for me to dry them and grind them into flakes and he sprinkles them on his food but a bottle will last him a long time. Last year in late Fall I picked several branches of these little bright red peppers and just stuck them in a glass to dry. Al still had pepper flakes so I just never got around to grinding that bunch and thought I would probably just keep them for seeds. This weekend George sent me a message and asked me if I had some of those pepper seeds because his didn't germinate this year. I didn't see the msg until yesterday, but as soon as I saw it, I cut the stems off of some peppers and stuck them down in a little plastic jewelry size bag, and put that bag inside a bubble wrap type mailer and took it to the post office. It was super light, and the envelope probably weighed more than the contents but it puffed up a little because the seeds were whole and the plastic bag probably had a little air in it. I had to wait in line for awhile, and when I gave the lady the package to weigh, she said, "That will be $2.45." I gave her a questioning look and said, "Really?" She said, "If you can make it thinner, it won't cost as much". Without a pause, I made a fist, reached across the counter to the envelope and gave it three quick hits with the side of my folded fist. She pulled back a little and gave a little giggle, and said, "That will be 94 cents". The woman at the counter beside me laughed and said, "That would make a good commercial". It was not my intent to entertain the Post Office patrons, but it seems I did. George said he received the package today, but I didn't ask him if the pods remained in the plastic bag, or if I blew them all out into the inside of the mailing envelope. I have now been educated by USPS and realize that although you are light weight, it will still cost more if you look fat. LOL...See MoreThis Week's Weather/May 23, 2016
Comments (20)Bon, I was thinking of y'all when the first (and, later, the second) tornado warning came out for Payne County and was hoping everyone was in a safe place. I'm glad you all are okay, but I think Bill and his truck have had enough excitement for one day. Sirens are odd things. It is surprising to me how often they are not sounded, or how they are sounded for hail but then inexplicably don't go off for tornadoes. The time to have mechanical problems is NOT when a tornado is bearing down on a town. And, of course, every now and then a tornado materializes so quickly that the folks closest to it don't get a warning....or, by the time they do, they're already in the shelter, the cellar or hiding in the bathroom or an interior closet. We are too far to hear our local siren (it is at the fire station and we have to send a human being to the station to manually turn it on, anyhow), but we have a NOAA Weather Radio upstairs and another one downstairs, and phone apps....and fire pager radios. If a tornado is ever going to sneak up on us, it will have to materialize right above our house out of thin air. Amy, I hope those storms head where they're supposed to, and miss you, but I feel bad for everyone in the path. Y'all just have to laugh with me. Chris came home from work this morning bound and determined to go storm chasing and I was not happy. Off he headed towards NW OK where he expected, after careful study, that the tornadoes were most likely to pop up. He was delighted to find himself in Woodward with a bunch of storm chasers, and with the guys from The Weather Channel. And, I have been delighted to see nothing popping up near him so far. I have kept him posted on the NE OK storms, and I am pretty sure he's sorry he's on the wrong side of the state. I'm not sorry, and they may yet get something to chase in NW OK, but if they don't, that's fine with me. Everybody stay safe and remember that Thursday-Friday look potentially dangerous as well. Comments (13)Thank you Ingida & Beth. Beth, I got two of my Stranger roses from Burlington and I think she sent me very healthy plants and gave them a good start. Great lady! Is your Strawberry Hill own root? I bought mine from Regan which grafted on Dr Huey. I heard that Austin own root will take a lot of time to be amazing (especially climbers), but I haven't been able to verify it yet since I don't have any own root Austin. I just moved my root bounded Strawberry Hill from a 5-gallon and plant it in the ground next to the fence so I can train them horizontally. I think it will be beautiful when the training is done.
