I didn't buy any roses tonight
Comments (6)Sigh, you convinced me. I bought Gemini and Fragrant Plum at Jungs for half off. Actually, they were 25% off, and then I could pay for half of that with my coupons. So they were really cheap. Then I bought Jude the Obscure for 40% off at the other nursery. They didn't have Valencia anymore unfortunately or I would have gotten that one too. Evelyn was left behind once again as I decided I liked Jude better. I decided that while the color on Night Owl was nice that I wanted bigger blooms. So I have a little pot ghetto now....See MoreHappy New Year Ya'll! Any plans?
Comments (9)I must first tell you I got this off Hallson's site, (thank you Arlene--it's wonderful!) their cooking forum and it is indeed wonderful and wonderfully easy to make. You can shorten the cooking time in the crock pot by putting it together in a large pot first and cooking it abit or at least bringing it up to "speed" to "hot"! Crockpot Chicken Tortilla Soup Place in crockpot 3 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves or cut into small cubes before placing in crock. Without draining anything, combine in crock-pot bowl or pot: 2 (15oz) cans black beans (I use three and you can combine other types of beans as well) 1 (14.5 oz) can tomato sauce or 1 large can crushed tomatoes (I prefer the crushed) 2 (15 oz) cans Mexican stewed tomatoes or "Rotel" (a spicy tomatoe mix in a can I like really well) 1 (4 oz) can chopped green chilies (don't if you use the Rotel unless you like it REALLY HOT) 1 cup salsa, your preference as to strength Pour over chicken and cook on low 8 hours. Just before serving, remove chicken, shred it (if not cubed before), and stir it back into the soup. Stir in: 1 can Niblets corn (I use the white shoe peg corn myself) Heat just long enough to get corn and chicken hot. Serve topped with shredded cheese, sour cream, and crushed tortilla chips. Or put the chips in the bowl first and ladle soup on top.( I love it with just the cheese on top) I have served this at couple of ladie's lunch's with a really good multi-grain bread rolls and they loved it! Saves well and is even better as leftover! Here is a really, really good pear salad I made to serve before this soup: Use 1 pkg Dole Spring Blend lettuce or similar type divided for 6 on individual plates top 5 slices of pear (canned works)(star arrangement) dried cranberries or raisins top with Feta Cheese and top that with the packaged Honey Roasted Almond slices I found a good vinegarette recipe to use that is: 3/4 cup sugar, 1 cup vinegar, 3/4 vegetable oil and 1 tablespoon poppy seeds and 1 tsp salt, heat to rolling boil in sauce pan and keep stirring till sugar dissoves! Cool and drizzle over salad! This salad was a hit! A quick and easy dip for tortilla chips: 1 roll of pork sausage (I use Jimmy Dean original) browned and broken up like ground beef 1 can Rotel (original or milder) 1 pkg. cream cheese Combine all and place in your smallest crock pot! Really yummy! Freezes well, too! I've recently decided I like cooking for small gatherings again! I'm really enjoying finding wonderful recipes o the internet, especially where folks can pst comments upon trying them out for themselves! I've gathered some real winners this month!! I even found the recipe for Tuscany Brio Grille's "Roast Chicken with Butternut Squash Risotto" today!!!! So yummy and "comforting"! Hope you get a chance to try......See MoreTonight's low, 48 degrees, any advice?
Comments (11)Ah, the great (bogus) below 50F temperature controversy. I have grown tomatoes for years in one of the coldest places in the US. Every year, my plants spend nighttime in the 40's, even in July and August, with no problems. I regularly get good yields of 18-20lbs or more, depending on the variety. I typically consider any plant below 20lbs an abject failure. I hope to get 30-35lbs. This may not sound like much to some of you, but here the season is always cut short by frost, and part of the yield is green tomatoes, that have to ripen on their own. Since I have been scoffed at, this year I am keeping a log book of nighttime temps, and eventual yield. (I normally don't track weather between May15th and Oct15th, because it is pointless.) Anyway, I didn't want to say anything, until the season was over, because there is a very good chance I will get hailed. (Frequent thunderstorms this year, due to a stormy weather cycle.) Just FYI, NDSU horticulture research dept one year grew a single Champion Hybrid plant that produced 57lbs of tomatoes, while experiencing at least 30 nights below 50F degrees, and about 14 nights below 45F. (I would have to drive down and pull the records to get an accurate count.) Several others had good yields - 37lbs, 35, 33, 40, 43, and another with 50lbs. The plants were eventually killed by a hard frost on Sept19th, which is near the standard frost date for the area. So far this year my plot has experienced: 8 nights below 50F and above 45F 11 nights below 45F 1 night 36F I was not able to plant on the usual date, due to frost (its a cold year.) I haven't been here arguing about this issue, because I've been busy dealing with flood waters. We have severe flooding this year....See MoreSay goodbye to your Magnolia's in Chicago tonight if anyone had any
Comments (7)Oh, it is macrophylla. Yes, it will be interesting to see if yours survives. Good luck! Macrophylla is a non-starter where I'm at, but I do have tripetala, which some folks refer to as Big Leaf. I've also got sieboldii and acuminata, with the former being most likely to fail. Does anyone in z4/5 have M. obovata? There's nothing like a magnolia thread to break me out of my winter blahs. :)...See MoreUser
