Is tile that looks like tile "out" in living areas?

I've just been reading through the posting about wood tile and didn't want to take over that post. But, I'm genuinely curious about using wood-look tile instead of tile that looks like what it is----tile. My house is over 7 years old and has engineered wood in the great room, den, and bedroom on the first level. The rest of the area (entry, hallway, DR, kitchen, and laundry) are all tile. They are 20" square with sort of a marbled look, but no one will ever think they're anything other than tile. Yes, it's hard and loud, but it has heated floor underneath, so it's really cozy; and I like the contrast with the wood. We're on Puget Sound so tile is necessary with all that gets tracked into this house.

So I'm wondering: What's the reason you use wood-look tile instead of "regular-looking" tile in those areas? And do you think it's a passing trend?
