I love it. The ruffles and colors of her dress look just like the rose. What talent and imagination your granddaughter has. She has a great career ahead of her.

Thank you all so much for all the lovely things you have said about Clare's drawing. I wish I could post more, but I'd probably get kicked off the Forum for being terminally OT. Clare has so many projects going it's hard to keep track of them--SoFL she has done whole groups of characters for her comic strip (just not as roses). She has been heavily influenced by Manga (Japanese cartoon illustration), but she has created some lovely fairies and spirits in nature, too (The Spirit of Water, which won a big prize), a violet fairy for me, which I may get posted. She has written and illustrated graphic novels, and children's books--I'd better stop now before I go over the top. Anyway, thanks again for those kind words, which I'm going to pass along to her. Nanadol, I am sure you will be as shocked, nay, horrified as I was, when I tell you that AL turned into a brazen, shameless hussy, flaunting those frou frou ruffles in shades of pillarbox red and bright vermilion on Christmas Day. She reminded me of those painted ladies dancing the cancan in the 19th century! I am hoping that it was just a wild Christmas party thing. I couldn't get a decent photo with the iPad camera... the glare was too bad but perhaps it's just as well. Who wants to be photographed when they are a little 'under the weather. Melodye

Thanks, mustbe and bellarosa. I'll make sure Clare knows about your nice comments. I think she needs to do a few more rose interpretations. Some roses just beg to be interpreted in human form--like a really deep, dark Twilight Zone or Munstead Wood, or a soft, elegant Evelyn.

Oz, how I wish could have see your AL on Christmas Day, or at least a photo. What a gift roses blooming on Christmas would be. Can you still take a photo of AL? Yes, a flouncing CanCan skirt is a perfect description. Diane

Nanadol, if she does that again, I'll certainly get my DH to take a photo. He has a really good camera which can be adjusted to surrounding light conditions. That bloom was the first of her 2nd flush so have more buds coming, but, to be honest, I hope they are more 'demure'. I will try to photograph these for you. This last flower was coloured like Emilien Guillot,although a shade or two deeper, and looked out of place. I'd hate to have to move her; she's a big girl! Melodye

By the way, I was warned and chose to ignore it.....Munstead Wood is a medium magenta pink at present, but the Spring blooms and (hopefully) those in Autumn make up for this summer aberration. Melodye

I know you Australians grow big roses, Oz. My Augusta is tall but not too wide. In Nov 2014, she suffered a lot of cold damage, but came back really vigorously. This year, I gave her cold protection which I hope helps. She seems to be a warm weather rose.

Did your rose look like this opening bloom of mine? I prefer her softer colors, but her coloration is all over the map, which I find interesting and love. Diane

Oz, I'm sorry your Munstead Wood lightened up in the heat, but I can imagine that even when it's not temperature hot, the strength of your sun's rays, due to their angle, is so much greater than here. That's got have a bleaching effect. I've found over the years that Ebb Tide is about the worst to bleach out. When ET was younger I literally got some blooms that were almost white. I wonder if AL has some pigments that fade more easily than others, so that in your summer sun the less transient pigments (reds?) are the ones that persist and give those petals their brightness. Just some late night musings. Diane

No Nanadol, this was really screaming scarlet. I would take any of the colours you show here, quite happily. They are beautiful photos. I think it is probably weather related, because our December temps have been 10- 15C above normal a lot of the time followed by cooler than normal intervals. She didn't flower this time last year so have nothing to compare her with; there was a long break between the end of October and mid January then another flush end of April/May. The colours then were similar to those you show. Gorgeous! Melodye
