Too late to plant garlic?

We just bought a few acres in Leander, and I'm wanting to get started on a garden a.s.a.p. I know garlic is supposed to be planted in October to get the largest heads, and often the seed garlic needs vernalization for up to 8 weeks before planting.
But does anyone think I'll have any success if I plant hardneck garlic this late in the year? I already purchased hardneck garlic, but if softneck might be more successful, I'll plant that instead. I'm really looking forward to growing our own garlic and would love not to have to wait until next year...
