I got Sprouts! Tidytips and Clarkia
Comments (2)This weather is nuts. They say that from now on, the temps will rise 1 degree per week (?); I would think your sprouts will be fine. I've not grown clarkia, but tidytips hung in for me with no problem in temps colder than we're having now. Of course, my containers are on the terrace, so maybe that made the difference. I better get sowing if I want any flowers this year. PV...See MoreI can't believe this worked!!!
Comments (9)Thanks, folks! I love having little victories like this and learning something in the process too. Roses are tougher than we give them credit for, except for this nasty periodic thing we call "winter". Especially last winter. Still, it makes the survivors all the more notable. Thanks for the extra info about the heel wood Buford and Michael. I'd forgotten that term, but it does make sense that the base would be a sensitive growth spot for roses given the chance. I haven't found a likely suspect to try it out on yet, but I'm watching some of my irreplaceable roses to see if I can root some "idiot proof" canes this way, if they have some canes to spare. I suspect if I do this deliberately I'll have to do some careful separation from the base to maintain that heel, not just cut off at the base. Sort of the opposite of what we do with Dr. Huey suckers, perhaps. Anyway, still going strong! Cynthia...See MoreBack to winter again..
Comments (4)pippi21 - sure hope it warms up soon for everyone's sake. This chilly weather is driving me batty! I'm so tired of piling on layers every morning. I must look like an eskimo digging in my flowerbeds! (;-p) Mary - let me know if you need more Montauk daisy seeds if yours don't sprout. I checked my sprout chart for last year and mine sprouted March 27 (WS 12/27). They bloomed first year from seed too. tomva - I got a good chuckle out of mentally picturing you walking back and forth with a pot of seedlings in each hand looking for a bare spot to plant them. I just pot up any extras and offer them to friends, family & neighbors who are (so far anyway) happy to take them off my hands....See MoreI can't believe this stupid weather
Comments (7)Another summer bites the dust :( I was expecting it though. Last summer was hot in Saskatchewan. We NEVER get two hot summers in a row. If we did, hell would freeze over. I guess there's still August, but the long range forecast calls for more cool and wet with all this Pacific air crossing the country. Where was it in winter, and WHY did it choose to arrive in the summer???...See More- 8 years ago
