touch pad keeps turning on

I turn off the touch pad on the control panel and in settings. The next day it is on again. I checked, and there was an update overnight. Yesterday HP updated. I turn off the touchpad, it comes on day after day.

Do any of you know of a way to keep it off until I want it? If I want to write a letter, I have trouble keeping my fingers away from the touch pad. If I touch it, the font grows.

I read what you have said to Jane, and I don't think it relates to me since I can turn it off, but I cannot keep updates from turning it on again.

I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. Thanks.

I have an HP laptop and am running Windows 10. Whenever HP or Windows updates, the touch pad turns on. I do not want to control the updates, and other than that I cannot think of anything else to do.

Ever try using the side of the tip (rather than the flat of your finger tip) of your index finger? The touch display on our old range was always so finicky and the only thing that seemed to work was tapping more with the side of the finger. No idea why...

Knobs are more ergonomically desirable. On the best knobs, you can both see and feel what the setting is. Clicks help too. Asolo gave good reasons for liking touchpads. For the cooktop, specifically, I like my Gaggenau, which has a magnetic knob. The glass is uninterrupted. Pick up the knob and it's solid. I like the way using the knob for the control works better than touching a horizontal touch pad. Vertical ones are easier. The way the Gaggenau knob works is that you put it in it's spot and a strong magnet holds it there. To select an element you push the knob along the surface toward that element's indicator, then turn to make the setting. You still have to look at the indicator to see what the setting is, however. The rest of the controls are touch circles, but when you set the timers or enter a memory, you touch the control then use the knob to determine your setting. The good and the bad is that you have to know how to work it. The bad is obvious--people who just walk up to it won't know what to do. That's also the good--they're not going to be interfering either. Just don't let dotty old Auntie walk off with the knob! I think the cooktop automatically shuts off when the knob is removed. For sure you can't work it without. I don't know how the knob works on other units. I went to a lot of bother to get mine (though there were other advantages too) because I'd fallen in love with that knob. It was worth it. If you don't have true love, however, I don't know that it would be of greater utility. Any of the controls that have a bar or arc that shows a graphic of the power level is better than a round knob with no pointer or markings. Sliders are better than tap tap tappers. Just for the ergonomics.

As I said, on the Gateway NE71B it is the F6 key and the Fn key does not need to be pushed. Better if ti did as that would prevent what happened to me, accidentally pushing the F6 key and thus not knowing it, only knowing the touch pad was dead. I tested just now and confirmed what I say. All made by Acer, no argument here, but it appears some functions are in different physical places on different models.

Oh yeah, if I lived closer to the Apple store, I'd already have one.. and a MacBook air! (Though I am not a fan of the PC store.. OK, so the things that start sucking up space are Movies (HD especially), photos/videos, and certain video intensive games. Other files take up space but text files are pretty darn small. Maybe I sound like a cheapskate, but I can buy (and have) a 1 Terabyte passport for less than the price diff between the 64GB ipad air 2 and the 128GB. Given the low cost of storage, the price diff between the models is ridiculous. I am a very casual gamer. I am not recording music with Garage Band or any of the other music composition apps. Other than scrabble, I might play 1-2 games a year. I won't use the camera extensively and when I do, I won't store photos on the ipad. I think the 64GB will be fine. I actually think the 16GB will be fine but I'll go 64. :) Thanks so much everyone!!

I'm not certain, I've never turned a touch pad off, but it sounds like you need to make an adjustment in your 'Start Up' menu.

The Touchpad usually Comes Back on after a Restart or when you Shut Down for the night, then next morning when you start it up again it will re-enable the touchpad. There is usually a FN Key Combination that will temporarily turn off the Touchpad.

You may be able to Disable the Touchpad in the BIOS Depending upon your BIOS. This will disable it permanently until you would turn it back on in the BIOS! Not all computers have this option in the BIOS!

You could always tear the laptop apart and Disconnect the Touchpad (not recommended)!

There is a File that you can run if you have it that will Uninstall and Reinstall the Touchpad. The File is SP54239.exe. You may have to look around for it on the HP Website if a Search on you Laptop doesn't find it!

Thank you for responding. You are correct about it coming back on, bugspot1. I was hoping there was something simple that I could turn off like the other two options are. When I type, I keep my fingers and wrists low, so I constantly touch the touch pad regardless of how hard I try not to do so.

I have very limited computer skills. My son just told me about BIOS, but I am afraid that I could do some damage going too deep into the computer. Unless there are other suggestions, I think I will stop the upgrades for now, and try to limit them to weekly. I also get frustrated with the start up menu. It seems to me that the mouse options keep moving around.

Why do you use the touch pad? I can understand why when you are traveling, but I just wonder why it must be so popular that the mouse may become obsolete?

Be sure the touchpad drivers are the recent update. If they are, you may be able to use Mouse Properties to control the clickpad. Use Control Panel to find Hardware/Devices. Right click on Mouse, choose properties. From there, you may or may not have a tab labeled Click Pad Settings. If you do, choose Click Pad Disable.

In BIOS, it's simple to shut down. Choose Advanced Tab, System Configuration, Internal Pointing Device, Disable. Your BIOS may name it clickpad, touchpad, etc.

Also make sure the BIOS firmware is up to date. HP offers the updates online.

I read back thru your post and I noticed that no one except Brushworks had mentioned going into the Mouse Properties. I thought I had read that you had already tried that. Anyway, on the Acer Laptop I'm on right now I have two different options that you may or may not have in the Mouse Properties. Below I've added a Photo with Both of the options I have circled in Red:
I first Checked the Disable when External USB Mouse plug In, then clicked Apply and then OK. I restarted the laptop and once fully booted it remained Locked (While Booting the cursor still worked). I next Unchecked that Box and I had Full Control of the Touchpad. I tried Clicking Stop Device and the Touchpad stop working immediately. Clicking on Enable Device then Enabled the Touchpad Immediately. After Restarting Both Ways the Touchpad Remained Locked after it was fully booted into Windows!
