Assuming that it will run for you or you don't mind getting your hands dirty to patch it up a little, it will probably do what you need. I have run home owner quality saws for more than 35 years. I suspect that my original 14" Sears saw was a Homelite. It ran for 25 years. I hear that the newer saws are lower quality but if you put some Stabil or other gas stabilizer in the gas, you will likely be OK.

A 14" bar is fine for your needs and actually more convenient since it is lighter than the bigger saws. If it is older, it will probably have regular carburetor adjustment screws which is a good thing. If you run into trouble, I would guess you should look at, or just replace the fuel lines (make sure that you know where they go; and bring pieces with you when you go for new fuel line) before you even check other stuff, but a carb rebuild kit will probably be inexpensive and useful at some point. OTOH, if all this sounds like a big pain, then perhaps you would be better off with an electric saw.

Price would be a HUGE determining factor.

Anyone has an idea about how old is the saw?

I have no problem with getting dirty hands and this should be a good learning challenge. Fuel lines should be easy to replace, but I'm a bit worried that some other rubber parts could be ending it's life and are not easy to find in Europe.

At another forum someone told me about the oil pump assembly diaphragm that is impossible to find...

Edit: I just reread your comment. You are in Europe. I once used a Jonsered for a summer cutting stumps under high voltage power lines. That was an excellent saw! I'd check into some comparable European models before I bought a used Homelite for $100.

I am in Portugal and the choice is not much... on the used market I can find for example a Jonsered 16" for around 150-160bucks

A new Husqvarna 236 goes for 230-240 bucks the cheapest

this is why this homelite was smiling at me :)

Anyway, thanks for your help... I'll go for the 50 and if it doesn't work I'll continue my search!

If the average prices are as high as you list, then I think you are safe finding a price in between the $50 and $100.

The prices here seem much less expensive! I just looked up the Husqvarna, and although the models seem different than those available in Europe, the one that is probably comparable to the 236 is what is called here... the 240, it sells for $179.

I suppose with more open spaces we have more demand for saws.

I can't find the age of your saw, but I see parts breakdown at jacks small engines. I see that it appears to have adjustable mixture screws. I also see that the zama carb isn't available and I didn't kill myself looking for carb kits. If the repair kit isn't available, then the saw could be an extra problem. The price sounded high, but I imagine you have to pay high taxes to cover all those European benefits.
