CEILING FAN WONT TURN (JUST A LITTLE BUMP WHEN TURN ON)

I just put on oil lubricant (a lot I think) on my ceiling fan because it making noise. Right after that then I switched it on and it went well. I turned it off after several hours of running. When I tried to turn it on again, it failed to function properly. On the first try to turn it on again, the ceiling fan run well on the highest speed, then I went to turn it to lower speed and at this moment, it stop functioning.
Everytime I turn it on or change the speed, the fan only tend to move a bit and stop. (Just a little bump). I gave a push but still it didn't go far and wont continue to turn. I have changed the capacitor with equal farad as previous, but the problem still persist. (the switch of fan is on the wall)

suggestion please.

I have never heard of anybody lubricating a ceiling fan the oil may have got down into the electrical circuit.

I wouldn't invest much time or money in attempting to repair an old fan with as inexpensive as the new ones are.

Are you checking the oil level? Both before you start initially and when it won't start hot? A little more description of just what is happening might help. The engine doesn't want to turn over or turns over but won't fire? There is a possibility that the carb float needle is leaking gas into the intake, then into the cylinder and on down into the oil (not good). However, you put on a new carb and it still does not do right. What you hear as dripping MAY be the hot muffler cooling and making cracking noises perhaps from running too hot due to partially sheared flywheel key or lean carb mixture. I think I would be inclinded to check the flywheel key. You should be able to do that by removing the cooling shroud, the flywheel mut or bolt and washer and looking down the keyways to see that the keyway in the flywheel and crankshaft line up. Also, installing an inline gas shut off valve and using it when engine is not running might be a good idea. I can send you a PDF of the Service Manual for that engine if you like. No, no subwoofer. Perhaps I was unclear. It's obvious that the fan is not the problem. The sound doesn't come from the fan, it seems to come from the attic or somewhere in the walls when different switches are flipped on. It just so happens that one of the things on those switches is a fan and I noticed it there first. It also makes the noise on a hall light and when the thermostat clicks on, all of which are close to each other and likely on the same circuit. I can't recreate the sound at will, it doesn't happen every time or even every day. So hopefully the electrician can still figure out what is going on. I read elsewhere on the web about "arching" being one possibility. Or a ground wire accidentally touching a hot in the panel box. Hopefully it's not too expensive of a fix and isn't dangerous. Thankfully we have Nest Protect smoke alarms that will notify our phones if there is smoke when we aren't home, so that makes me feel better. I mentioned static because I live in Alabama and this just started happening at the same time as our coldest weather yet. Everything is super dry and cold, and my heat has flipped to auxiliary a few times. Not sure how/if it connects, probably not, but that was my thinking. The electrician should be here tomorrow afternoon and ill update after I know what the issue was. In the meantime, any more suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks! Jen

So, my SIL has a U shaped stair open at the top to the entry and to the LR along the side. When you reach the bottom you are in a space about, oh, 8x9'. Then you go through a wide doorway to the basement rooms: "family room", utility, guest bedrooms. It creates plenty of separation, and if they had kids a door across the family room doorway would contain all the noise you need. The "arrival" space at the bottom of the U stairs is kind of nice to have!

Question about LED bulbs that won't turn off due to ghost currents

The problem is likely the combination of the kind of switch (triac) used in the ceiling fan combined with the low voltage power supply for the LED lights. The LED bulbs have inductors or capacitors in there input stages that often play havoc with triacs being able to shut off. An electronic snubber added to the circuitry would solve the problem, which is very difficult to do now, but what you can do is to install an external snubber by replacing one of the LED bulbs with an old style incandescent bulb. The tungsten filament in the old bulb has resistance but no capacitance or inductance and often the addition of an old bulb in parallel with the LED bulbs is enough to allow the triac to shut off. A resistor of the proper value and power rating wired in parallel with the LED bulbs should work as well.

I agree with the above. You don't say how you "oiled" it or what oil you used, but it sounds like the oil made its way to where it shouldn't be and is adding friction. You could take it down, disassemble it, and try to clean/fix it but you're probably better off just replacing it.

By your use of English(which is really quite good) I'd say you are from a country other than the US. Our fans have not needed lubrication for many years, so most of us have no experience in doing so.

Not knowing how you added the oil or what kind of oil was used, we cannot recommend much more than replacing the fan.

Oiling -- depends. Many newer fans are made with sealed bearings.

However we have a 27 year old HUNTER brass fan with wooden panels. We check the oil (it is seldom low) and only add Hunter fan oil (very refined, light oil) as needed. The Hunter Fan Co. Has been helpful and responsive on the few occasions when I've wanted information.

Our fan runs all day every day. AND, it was a store demo fan that I begged the folks at Lechmere Sales (anyone temember them from way back?) to let me buy.

If the fan was a cheap fan w bushings, you might want to replace it. But it it is a well made (they're usually heavy) fan with brass bearings, call the manufacturer's tech support.
