My new kitchen needs tons of help (not just an island)!
Comments (24)Sorry! I have been so limited on time but I wanted to touch base on several of the postings so here goes! Nancy, I wish I could switch out the cabinets between stove and sink but it is not a fit. Hoosiergirl, Thanks so much for your input about a small island. I am looking at about the same size after discussing it with dh. It seems the island couldn't be a permanent fixture because if we moved any furniture in and out of the house it would be a problem. I have been taking pictures of the inside of the cabinets as I have been tackling getting the stuff off the counters. Dorothy, I hope that in the process of getting new countertops dh will be able to move the drawer base and put the dishwasher beside of the sink. I am having a little trouble convincing dh to take the trim off immediately in that my "family emergency" is that dfil is in CCU at the local hospital. I plan to try the grouping of three on the glass items this weekend. As I said so many of them are truly sentimental and I feel that the place for them is up there if I can make it work! Chris, As you can see I have a small one but I hope to redo it to make it more like the one in the picture! Patricia, what kind of soft items do you have in mind for a kitchen? Sky, I measured the area and it is 36" x 36" over the sink. I hope to start looking for a mirror but wondered if I should spend the $ when I am going to need some kind of backsplash down the road. Nancy, thanks so much for taking the time to do this for me. DH says he wants a lighter color in there rather than the Copper Mountain. Michelle, thanks so much for the input on the other kitchen. I loved it. I know dh won't let me paint the cabinets. This is the third kitchen I have redone and the first one we painted, the second ended up being wood doors and painted cabinets. He loves the true oak. The island in that kitchen makes me drool and since I have doors to close in the cart that I have and want a tile top I think I am going to look into putting those mouldings on it like that. It also makes me think about the post about taking off the cabinet over the sink and replacing it with a valance. Oh my mind just went overboard. I wonder about the height of that particular cabinet. I do have one more dilemia about the placement of the fridge, with the freezer on that side and the icemaker on the door, there isn't really enough room to open the freezer. If I moved the drawer base down and put the dw beside the sink. I will be back!...See MoreNew construction need kitchen help
Comments (14)First off, gorgeous kitchen! I love that Perseus granite! The chiseled rock look will be so unique. Awesome! Btw, mama goose, you made me laugh out loud once again! However, I would consider doing as cpartist suggested, using the steel grey granite for the whole backsplash and perimeter tops. I think it will go well with the natural rock/stone look you are wanting. Reason being is that your hickory cabinets (while gorgeous) are naturally multicolored and making 'stripes'. The uppers and many of the lowers have the natural grain running vertical. Except, the drawers are horizontal. Subway tiles, to me, are not leaning towards that natural wood and stone vibe and may add even more stripes depending on the grout color. No matter which direction you ran either of those mosaic tiles you pictured (btw, of the two, I do prefer the second), my honest opinion is it will look "just crazy" like you were worried about. Comments (22)this is the only "major" change we want to make (*aka move cabinets around.) We are happy with the builder just want to redesign the kitchen. Originally we were fine with the pantry but want to maximize our budget aka look at alternatives (aka if we can make the change great if not we are not crazy worried .) And ty for everyones points its beyond helpful. we can't find anything even close in our market for this amount. (been looking for a long time now) plus we love the lot and the neighborhood (small city)...See More***Need help/advice with new home under construction***
Comments (15)Hi- Sorry you are in such a pickle. I would try to get out of the pickle jar even if it costs you money, because as pointed out before, this is the first in a long line of no's. Subdivisions are for yesmen and yeswomen, not for people who like to have it their way. But if you are stuck, how much floor plan changing can you do? What do you think of this idea? Enlarge the dining room by making it rectangular, with the long dimension extending toward the kitchen. Narrow the kitchen, giving that space to the family room. Get rid of the breakfast room altogether. You don't need it, eat in the dining room and let the kids learn to not wipe their hands on the good chairs. Change the shape of the kitchen to a long narrow one, like a galley kitchen which can be absolutely fabulous and very efficient, too. There is an article on galley kitchens on Houzz, and many others on the internet. You don't need seats at the counter, you'll be eating in the dining room, remember? In fact, you don't need an island at all, because your galley kitchen will be on as much of the four walls as possible with only an entry to the dining room and an entry to the family room. You can also narrow the entry to the family room so you can add cabinets for storage on those walls. You can add a pot rack on a wall or ceiling somewhere if no one plays for the NBA. When you figure it all out, if there is enough room, you can put in a little kneehole desk if you want, or a tiny cafe table with two chairs for a quick cuppa....See Morecpartist
