**** for all of you! Well done. Yes, all those mentioned, except Napoleon, owned Newfoundlands. We had one, too, named Irwindyl's Chincoteague Rebel. the name came from the breeder (mrs. Irwin) and my dad's family who settled on Chincoteague Island on Virginia's Eastern Shore in the early 1600s. We called him Reb and he was the best...until Clouseau, that is. Reb went with us to Wisconsin. He was still a pup and weighed 100 pounds! He was a great, soft pillow in the back pf the wagon on the trip. He also scratched up our legs as we walked/tried to swim. He was a rescuer through and through. So, here are some interesting facts... Napoleon did not own a newf, but was rescued by one when he fell overboard from the ship on the way to Elba. He was not a fan of dogs and even the rescue did not change that. Lewis' newf was named Seaman and traveled on the expedition with him and Clark. The Indians kidnapped him and Lewis sent three armed men to threaten to kill the tribe. They returned the dog. Murdoch took his newf Rigel on the Titanic. Murdoch went down with the ship, but Rigel swam next to a lifeboat for three hours until rescued by the HMS Carpathia. Rigel was recognized as a hero for alerting the captain of the weakened lifeboat with survivors before it hit them. That is the story, anyway. Rigel was adopted by one of the crew aboard ship. Luath was Barrie's Landseer newf (the black and white ones) and was the inspiration for Nana in Peter Pan. Faithful was the first dog of US Grant and Carlo was Dickinson's newf. Brumus was Kennedy's and Bashaw was Dudley's favorite dog. Boatswain was Lord Byron's newfoundland. He was born in Newfoundland and died at Newstead Abbey just five years later of rabies. Robber, who accompanied him on a fishing boat as he fled creditors(that flight inspired The Flying Dutchman) and Russ, his last dog who is buried at his feet. Have a wonderful Sunday, friends. LOL ... I should have included a few pics of the total meltdowns ... just for Karma balance. There's a few of them here. Thinderbolt went from pristine to gone in about a week. Right in front of the ADG is an Island Charm with leaves like netting and if you look closely you'll see that the Lungwort has a few leaf holes. (Not all from slugs) I've used one bottle of Sluggo in two years ... but plenty of ammonia spray. Regal Splendor & a baby Francee are actually the two best preserved still but they're in a spot that the Honeysuckle vine thats overhead makes it difficult to get a good pic. The birds with nests under the overhang have 'fertilized' everything underneath them this summer. That area needs a makeover badly. One of the downsides to hybridizing is the messy look of the scapes not being trimmed back. Hopefully there will be a good bout of Indian Summer before frost and I can make a little extra garden time. Move a few and freshen things. Hi guys, I don't post a lot on this forum but as a book lover and a gardener, this thread caught my eye. I know a few of you have referenced libraries (yay!) , but one thing I wanted to emphasize is that if you are looking for vintage books, do check out the book sales that libraries have. I work in a library, and sadly, non-fiction books are slowly becoming a thing of the past (up there with magazines). So many people go online now for info, and libraries are shrinking the size of their non-fiction collections, and often sell off their non-fic books. Secondly, it's absolutely amazing the number of books that get donated to libraries when one's loved ones pass away or downsize to eldercare. And so many people don't recognize the value (literary or monetary) of many books. I could almost guarantee that the above-referenced $185 book, or books similar to it, are donated regularly to libraries because it's "just an old book", and nine times out of ten, the library staff doesn't know or doesn't have time, effort, funding, or staff with knowledge, to research the value of donations. So they sell for a buck or two at the sale. Or even if they ARE recognized as something valuable, you can still get a better deal at a library book sale. Lastly, this might sound offensive to some, but check the dumpster at your library regularly. It's absolutely heartbreaking the amount of perfectly good books that get tossed. Sometimes libraries won't sell discards from their collections because they figure folks won't buy books with stickers, labels, or books marked "withdrawn". Other times again, they don't realize any value in a given book and it gets tossed. Heartbreaking. As a book lover I feel that someone somewhere could appreciate any book, and as an environmentalist I always think they should take the time to remove the covers, etc. and recycle, at the very least. But again, on the environmental point, it comes down to funding, staffing, time - as well as attitude! Okay, I'm getting down off my soapbox - or should I say my pile of books lol? Just wanted to remind folks of another option to acquire - and rescue! - a good garden book! :) Dee
