Can you critique my kitchen layout please?
Comments (4)Overall, it's a really nice plan that just needs a few tweaks. As others have mentioned, having the "barrier" island between the fridge and sink is a problem that can be solved with a prep sink on the island. If you don't already have a trash pull-out there, I would add one if you add a prep sink. There are really only two other significant changes I would make: 1. I would move the seating to wrap around the end (i.e., one chair on each side and one on the end). This would avoid the cramped aisle with fridge doors opening onto the backs of people seated at the island. It would also allow those seated to see each other, rather than being line up all facing the same way. A curved end to island would help with this. 2. Also to help with the aisle issue, I would move the fridges together and put the wine cooler behind the seat on that side, since it's less likely to be opened as often and the door swing will take up less space. One more thing to consider is what is through the door by the ovens. If that door accommodates a lot of traffic, the open oven doors could be a serious hazard....See MoreCritique my layout please: any showstoppers? stupidities?
Comments (26)Thanks everyone! All of you who said the spacing between the DW and sink is too close, you are right. :-) I stood in front of where I positioned the sink, took out my tape measure, and mimed opening the DW door. I think what happened is I had more space in an earlier iteration but with a blind cabinet in the corner (like today's kitchen has). Then when I put in the corner cabinet/susan instead, I found I had some extra inches on that wall. I must have shifted the DW over next to the corner cabinet thinking 'yay, a wider drawer by the range', and forgot about actually being a person standing there. Hi taximom_co, I haven't ruled out hiring a kitchen designer yet. I believe they add value if you get the right one that meshes with one's style. I've had a hard time finding a real design-skilled KD, who takes the time to understand how I would operate in the space. I've had a few bad encounters over the last year in talking with people from 'design/build' firms, even with the firms that were recommended by friends. Given the beautiful kitchens that I've seen posted on this forum, I know there is talent here and I wanted a "gut check" that my ideas weren't completely off base. I would swear that two of the guys I talked to never cooked a meal in their lives. I had one guy from a 'design/build' firm actually arguing with me over not putting the microwave over the range. (I mean, if he's going to argue with me before I give him any money, and so he's spending time arguing on his dime vs mine, I could only imagine what it would've been like working with him under contract.) cheri127 yes, I love a large sink. In fact, the layout ought to show a single large sink, but either the software didn't have that one or I chose the wrong one. I'll attempt a layout with a corner sink over the weekend and post it to see what you think. Hi buehl, thanks for your comments about the fridge placement--it's is precisely for that "easy access for snackers/don't interfere with the workers" that I'm hoping to achieve. It's good to hear someone has it working in real life. :-)...See MoreCritique my Layout please Kitchen/Hearth Room
Comments (8)I was surprised to see your name attached to a layout post! Another kitchen to plan...Fun! Even for my family, this plan is BIG. Lots of walking. It's really nice, but I'm not sure I'd want it this spread out. But I love it, too. As you can tell, I'm waffling. ;-) I'm not comfortable with the stove location, as it seems to be somewhat of a walk-through area and the island isn't oriented well to be prep space. If the stove were on the back wall behind the island, it would be great in relation to the island and prep work area. Your aisles are too wide for me! With the stove behind the island, I'd snug them closer together, for easy prep-and-turn. The widest aisles in my kitchen are 4 ft, and I wouldn't want them wider, especially where I work on both surfaces to each side at once. Maybe this is all too specific for where you are in the process right now. Will your local building code/regulations allow this many windows? Ours wouldn't. Have you thought about things like where groceries will come in, etc?...See MorePlease critique my cabinet layout
Comments (6)Because we leave our small appliances out (coffee maker, blender, toaster), I'd prefer not doing the cabinets down to the counter. If you're planning on hiding appliances behind those doors, they look a too small to be really useful for that. Prepping in front of the dishwasher could become bothersome too. Moving it to the other side of the sink would still give you 4 ft of prep space (I'm assuming it's a 9 ft island) with the added benefit of it no longer being opposite the cooktop. Swapping the refrigerator and wall ovens will help keep children out of the prep/cooking aisle when they want something from the fridge, depending on how they commonly enter the kitchen....See MoreUser
