Ikea BCC lazy Susan storage ideas

I have a pretty good idea of where I want things to go in my new kitchen, but I have this neat corner cabinet in my peninsula and I haven't really figured out what I should use it for:

I have the bottom pull-out now lowered so there is a lot more space between them than this picture shows.

I was originally thinking Tupperware, but now I think that smaller pieces and lids would fall through the rails and get lost back in the cabinet.

For perspective, here is where it is in the kitchen (from right to left): large gap will be sink, smaller gap is dish washer, small drawers for serving utensils, pull out trash, BCC, large drawers for dishes.

Thoughts and ideas?

Small appliances grinder, waffle maker, electric hand mixer, hard boiled egg maker, ninja or vitamix, foreman grill, etc or serving dishes you should try to stock things close to where they will be used.

What a lovely amount of lower drawers. That is great for taller items that would not fit into your drawers- small appliances, etc. It does not seem to be in the mail part of your kitchen so perhaps the items that you use less? Mine is right beside my sink and I love having the pyrex bowls there instead of the uppers where they used to be- much easier to lift up from a small stack than to pull out of an upper cabinet.

My old kitchen had 2 corner cabinets with lazy susans that I replaced with different types of shelves. I have no pictures and both are long gone but I'll try to describe them. In one cabinet I used white laminate shelves that I think I found at Target, if I remember correctly, that were meant to be stackable closet shelves for shoes. It took a bit of effort to manuever them in but the end result was much more usable space than the lazy susan ever provided. All of my bakeware fit into this cabinet. In the other corner I also used stackable shelves but they were the wire shelving with white coating that hooked together. This cabinet had all of my tupperware, trays and miscellaneous baskets and plastic items that were too big to fit anywhere else. I'm sorry not to be able to describe this better but with a little ingenuity you can find a way to make your corner cabinets usable if you can't get rid of them. Our family joke was always that I didn't need to take Yoga classes because all my bending to get something out of the corner cabinets was both a physical and mental exercise. The design for our new kitchen, two hurricanes later, does not have even one corner cabinet and this was at the top of my wish list when we had to rebuild.

We are getting a carpenter to build us Super Susans. I am sure you can find one too. We are making sure that he makes the circle as big as possible to avoid wasting space, and to avoid that black hole where things can fall off. By having your turntable on a fixed shelf, nothing can fall down below (could fall off the turntable if you spin too fast, but it's less likely). With the pole type LS, because the shelves often aren't perfectly level, ie because of weight issues they can tip, and things are more likely to fly off. Think about it, if you have a spice turntable (I have a rubbermaid plastic one that I think I paid 50 cents for at a garage sale), it lays flat on the shelf, and nothing flies off, and those are just small bottles. So, have a turntable on a solid shelf, make the circle as big as possible, and build up the sides a few inches, I think you can learn to like Susan.

I know you will love your susans and the efficiency of the rotating shelves. Just plan to store things that take advantage of the vertical space as well as horizontal shelf space. Pie shaped containers might be useful if you plan to store bulk foods there, but I don't know of any. Perhaps someone will list a source. They OUGHT to exist. Here's what I did or plan to do: The two shelves of my bottom super susan holds all of my small appliances: sous vide, mixer, blender, food processor, grill, Nesco roaster--that sort of thing. There is a lot of vertical space between these two shelves, and small items do not make good use of that vertical space, IMHO. There is very little wasted horizontal or vertical space here. One year after cabinet installation, I am just now getting around to putting super susans into the very larger corner wall cab. 15'' wall cabs make for a very big and very inaccessible upper area (26'' x 26''). I am putting four susans in with less space between than is usually planned. The two lower shelves will hold sets of fairly often used items: mugs, stemware, tumblers. Upper shelves will hold seldom used casseroles and such. Because there isn't much space between shelves, I plan to store largish flat items or sets of duplicate items like glasses to make it easier to find what I am looking for. Because the upper cabinet has glass doors, the fronts of each susan will probably showcase white teapots and pitchers for decorative effect, as the shelves do now. I simply cannot WAIT to get these installed. They SHOULD go in Saturday. They are just to big and heavy for me to lift into place. So I empathize with your eagerness to play.

My Ikea lazy susan cab sits right next to my sink cabinet. I've read many posts here where peeps complain that the Ikea susan wastes space (it's a 38x38" cab and there is about 4 or 5 inches of empty space between the shelves and the the cabinet sides. Well, I find this "wasted space" perfect for storing large items upright that don't fit in any other cabinet and that I use when working at the sink. On one side of the susan, I store a super sized cutting board that we use for prepping over the sink/counter and an extra large tray that we use daily to carry dishes and food from the kitchen to the dining room and back. On the other side of the rotating susan we've installed a pull-out double towel rail for my dish towels (my under-sink pull-out holds a trash can and cleaning supplies and I really didn't want to keep my dish towels in there). The bottom holds a foldable step stool The rotating shelves hold my salad spinner, an extra dishpan and colanders of various sizes, a well as small appliances such as the juicer, mixer, food processor, blender etc. Plus I have plenty of space left for new gadgets in the future. :-) During planning our new kitchen, I worried that opening the double doors of the susan cab and retrieving the items on the shelves would would feel awkward, but that's not the case at all. I'm glad I ignored the much repeated advice on this forum, to forgo the corner cab altogether or do a blind corner. Best of luck with your kitchen remodel.

In my previous house I had a lazy susan and I used it for canned goods and . It was easy to see what I had that way and the small appliances were put in the pantry space where the cans would have gone otherwise.

I would probably end up using the lower one for the less-used appliances and the upper one for pantry-type storage (cans, jars, things that are "on deck" to be used when the current supply runs out.)

Ooh, I like all of these ideas!

Lori, doesn't it get confusing having food separated from the rest of your pantry? I feel like I would never know what was where or how much of anything I had our come up with meal ideas without being able to look at it all at once.

Well, we don't have a separate pantry big enough for "everything." We have baking supplies in the baking area, cereal and crackers in the area we use for breakfast prep, etc., oils and vinegars in the upper near the cooktop. Plus we don't have a lot of stuff in cans, so it only stores canned tomatoes, tuna, maybe some beans for when we don't have time to cook them. I guess I've never done meal planning based on looking at what's available, though. We just replace the staples that we always have whenever we run out (ideally, anyway.) But I don't have 4 kids at home, so I'm sure that's a whole different story! But if you store just one category there, it could work.

You are right about the plastic container storage, though. We have ours there in our current kitchen and it is one of those things that's changing in the new house. Blasted things are always spinning off into the corner.

Haha, yeah, I pretty much fly by the seat of my pants every day around 4 pm! We definitely get some creative meals that way though :)
