Using sour cream as a suet substitute for birdseed?
Comments (6)I am not 100% certain but I believe that commercial chicken feed has whey as an ingrediant. In some countries geese and ducks used to be fattened on soured milk. I would wonder if the OP had noticed any problems with his chickens. Some bird feeding books still suggest feeding scraps of cheese to birds in the winter to provide fat. You have brought up an interesting suject which I will have to check on more fully....See MoreMilk gets sour in our new GE Monogram Refrigerator
Comments (10)In my old Maytag fridge there were rather large temperature swings which caused foods to simultaneously freeze (in the back of the shelves) and spoil (in the doors). I had to be very careful where I kept things. Meats and dairy had to be in the back of the fridge, while produce had to be stuffed in the door. I kept two instant-read thermometers in the fridge at all times, one in the door and one on the shelf. There was a 7-8 degree difference between the two. There were also large swings in the temperature due to the weather. On a hot day, I had to remember to crank up the compressor or the fridge would read 45 degrees. During a cold snap, everything in the fridge would freeze. In my new KitchenAid fridge, there is less than a 2 degree temperature difference between the door and the shelves. And it doesn't care about the weather. I keep it set at 37 and it holds very well. I would think your new Monogram should do the same. Food is supposed to be refrigerated at less than 40 degrees, so if you want to keep your milk in the door, you may want to stick a thermometer in there to keep tabs on the temps....See MoreHow Much Milk do you Use A Week?
Comments (37)I probably use a gallon a week - just me. Used skim for a long time, but the sugar difference is so slight I went back to 2% as the 2% freezes much better. For those of you are throwing out money but pouring out milk, try freezing it. I try to buy extra on sale & freeze. Sure helps the unemployment budget, but I did it while working, too. My mom freezes hers 'as is' (doesn't use as much as I do), but I prefer to pour out some for head room as it expands. I mark the freeze date & and expire date on the lid with a pemanment marker. I have a small chest freezer & that lets me see quickly - without removing several containers - which I need to use next so it keeps rotating. Give it a try...You won't be loosing anything & just might save a bit!...See MoreHow to use 1/2 & 1/2 and skim milk for whole milk
Comments (3)Wow, I didn't think of an actual measurement/equivalent. I just throw in some when I need to. I put some in my kefir recently to see if it made a difference....See More- 10 years ago
