I'm Dreaming of A White Christmas......
Comments (55)Susan, Our biggest adventure is just getting out of the driveway. For the last four nights, including last night, our overnight lows have dropped to 16, 14, 16 and 16 degrees. So, all afternoon long the snow and ice melt and form huge puddles in the driveway and then at night they refreeze into what is essentially a 300-foot long skating rink. It takes that refrozen ice/snowmelt half a day to start melting again and then it forms huge puddles that refreeze again. Once you start driving down our driveway, you can't use the brakes or you'll slide and it is nerve-wracking. We have it good compared to many though, and I am not complaining, just saying that snow falling is pretty and after it falls it then is an unwelcome guest that just won't leave! Last night while we were eating dinner, our firefighters got paged out to a housefire...the 2nd one here in the last 5 or 6 days, the third one in the last month and the 4th one since November 1st. That's a lot of housefires for a county as thinly populated as ours, and I feel for the families who have had their homes damaged or destroyed. Their situation reminds me that a little ice on the ground is just an inconvenience, and not a tragedy, in the overall scheme of things. I'm going to make suet this afternoon. I hope y'all have fun on your shopping experience and be careful on the ice.....you don't want to hurt your back! Next year if I start hoping for a white Christmas, I want y'all to slap me upside the head and remind me "been there, done that, and it was a mess". OK? Dawn...See MoreRe- Need to vent-I'm so sad
Comments (7)I sympathize, rosies. You have not failed in any aspect, at all. You have done everything in your power to maintain your mother's health in the face of many obstacles. You must be very tired. I'm in year 3 of caretaking, too. Mum is losing her mental faculties now. Short term memory is waning, though physically she is quite healthy and fit, despite a stroke in '04 (did the mental damage). She has gone from an independent old woman, to one that must be really "cared for"... I get her up in the morning, see that she dresses herself, washes her face, fixes her hair. I prepare her breakfast, helpmeet does lunch, we split dinner. I put her to bed, see that she takes her pills, schedule the "bath lady", all the things that you have to do for an elderly parent. It's really hard! and you lose your own freedom. I haven't been out for dinner with the helpmeet "on the spur of the moment" for over 2 months now. I can't visit a greenhouse/nursery after work... I have to go right home, make sure the urostomy pouch is emptied, she has a glass of water, and that the sign is on the toilet reminding her NOT to empty the pouch again until it's time for bed. From the time I wake up until I go to bed I think about Mum and the next "chore" on the list... You have done as much as you can be expected to do. You've done it well, with love and commitment. It's OK to feel sad about what is changing in your life. But don't spend too much time feeling guilty even though it's part of the deal. (Tell the facility you would rather not have them shove so much garbage food into your mother. You are paying them to take care of her and you have every right to expect them to follow your wishes with respect to diet!)...See MoreI'm keeping some Christmas..And Tree talk
Comments (16)Oak, I posted the other night and it disappeared, so I'll try again. I've had my 7 1/2' tree up for 4 years and I still love it. It is in the livingroom and that is my favorite room. In the early morning hours when I wake up and can't go back to sleep and don't want to disturb DH I will go in and just sit and enjoy the lights and ornaments. I took some pictures to show you, but I didn't like any of them enough to post. It is so much prettier IRL than my pictures. It has colored lights on it. It is decorated in mostly blue, white, and silver except for some of the approx. 50-60 birds on it. If I ever take it down I will add more lights and maybe some white ones to brighten it up a little. It came prelit and doesn't have quite enough to satisfy me. I like LOTS and LOTS of lights. Other than that, it is perfect. My family teased me a lot at first, but they finally accepted it. I guess the neighbors across the road and the people driving up the road have gotten used to the crazy lady who lives up on the hill with the Christmas tree lit up in the window at odd times during the year!! Keep your tree up as long as you are enjoying it. Life is short. Grab the enjoyment while you can. Betty...See MoreGetting in the Christmas spirit
Comments (13)Fruitcake isn't generally one of my "go to" items; however, one of our grocery stores makes one that is quite good in a cocktail bread sized loaf. NO CITRON! Citron has always been the offending ingredient for me, but I like the cake part with the candied cherries, red and green pineapple, nuts, dates, and raisins, etc. Although I love the holidays and regard this Advent season as a time for preparation and contemplation, I'm still in a recovery mode from a health crisis, so I'm not doing much decorating inside - aside from poinsettias for the hearth and a swagged garland for the mantel. My gift list is small and going to the bank for crisp new bills finished that off in quick order. I like to keep a coat pocket full of change since I can't pass a SA Kettle without depositing something - it's all a cheery "Merry Christmas" this year; "Happy Holidays went away... not that I'd be offended by either greeting....See More- 8 years ago
