Prune apple now?

I have a big apple tree, at least 30 years old. It is in my ornamental garden, being ornamental ;-). It is usually pruned in early spring, but as soon as the snow is gone, things get growing, and the falling branches damage what is growing under it. Could I have this tree pruned now? I am in zone 5, Ontario, usually it would be quite cold, but this year we have had just a few frosty nights, with for the rest unseasonably warm temperatures. Is it OK to do it now, or should I wait for the cold? The tree is large, the pruner has to climb it, so the snowy season is not ideal.
