Removing uprooted tree stumps
Comments (11)Good pix! Having lived in a hurricane zone, I've seen similar results. Too many trees too close to make a bonfire safe. Suggest look for a commercial company with heavy-duty chipper. Why pollute the air when there is all that potential mulch available?! If a chipper is too expensive, pile up the roots (cut into more-or-less manageable pieces) and heap dirt over them at least 12" deep. It'll take a few years, but they will decompose and you'll have wonderful compost. You can plant bulbs in the dirt - they will love the decomposing roots, and make the mound look like a deliberate gardening plan: a small hill of crocus, early/mid/late daffodils, hyacinth, early/mid/late tulips, allium, asiatic/aurean/oriental/formosan lilies (with some clematis as a ground cover) and fall asters would give you color from early spring to late fall with very little effort....See MoreQuestion about removing tree stump using high-nitrogen fertilizer
Comments (15)I had the same gameplan back in 2006 when a July storm took down three Black Locusts. I went cheap and had the tree service leave the stumps, planning on trying the high N method. Urea was available at the nearby Hummerts so I thought I had it covered. Fortunately I tried drilling the holes before I bought the fertilizer. I tried two different drill bits and never got more than a 1/2" deep hole. I know Black Locust is known for being a very durable wood so maybe it was the stumps or maybe it was me. Six years later and the stumps are still there, one covered with ivy and euonymous and the other two partially covered with zoysia. So I'd suggest trying to drill the holes first before you spend money on the fertilzer....See MoreTree/Stump removal
Comments (7)Novie, call your builder and ask them if it will save you $$$ by helping prep the site in any way. Mention the tree and if cutting it down or removing the stump will make a difference. I am thinking they scout the area and bring the appropriate equipment to level your soil, excavate, pour the gravel base and all that. Its probably like painting a car. More prep work you do the cheaper it is or the less chance a step will be skipped or a stump used as backfill. They would probably appreciate not having to clear shrubbery also. Let me know what they say. I still think they will destroy that small of a tree with a dozer or some piece of equipment in three minutes....See MoreRemove a brick? Or drill holes through the brick?
Comments (5)I usually use a drill masonry drill just smaller than the mortar joints and drill four holes. This gives you some room to use a plugging chisel to remove the mortar around the brick. The end of the brick is then pretty easy to break off and remove. In a masonry house you may have to repeat the process on the next wythe....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
