Door frames and pine kitchen cabinet doors scratched

The lower cabinet doors in my rental house don't look shiny anymore compared to the top ones. The finish seems to be worn. Beside using stain to stain it, what else can I do to match the finish?

Also, the tenant had dogs and cats who scratched door frames. What can I do to minimize the damaged look?

Why not use stain? Just get a color that is close, rub it over the door, wipe off excess then apply two coats of poly. For the scratches, sometimes you can rub a similar colored stain over the scratches and they may go away. However, if the scratches are too deep, the stain may turn them into black lines. If that happens, you can only sand them out and re-stain.

Thanks. By the way, how do I match the stain color? The stain in a can is always much darker, due to the volume of it

We did a cosmetic remodel of our kitchen a couple of years ago. We had the builder grade golden oak kitchen from 1979. Started out as a DYI with the Rustoleum Cabinet Transformation kit (I think the color is called Bayleaf) and started on the cabinet boxes. I fell in love with that color and decided to order new raised panel doors online from Raw Doors. Although the product worked ok on the cabinet boxes, my attempts to paint a flawless door was less than successful, so I contacted a local painter and he sprayed them with some kind of a catalytic paint or varnish(?) to match the cabinet boxes. They are absolutely perfect, and the finish is bullet-proof. Not cheap ($100 per door for paint and approx. $40 for the door). We did replace the white tile counters with Silestone, got some new stainless appliances and put in recessed lighting. I am very happy with the finished product.

I would be careful about the three-pane patio door you are considering. If the panes are too narrow (meaning if you are intending to decrease the size of the individual panes that you currently have, in favor of adding a third pane) the divide can end up looking like prison bars that block a lot of the incoming liight and obstruct your view due to added trim around the individual panes. Also, consider how you will dress the wider door for light control and privacy--patio doors are often a challenge. Your current patio door doesn't line up at the top with the window above the sink, and the window in the adjacent living room? Maybe a taller patio door would work better than wider patio doors? If you have two-lite windows in the adjoining room I would keep it consistant, both in color and number of lites..

I don't understand what you mean by 'due to the volume in it'. I would just head on over to Home Depot and grab a few of the small cans of the Minwax stains in colors that may by close. If you find a color that is the right shade, but it is too dark, you can pour some paint thinner in it to lighten the color.

Sorry for the confusion. I just meant that the applied thin layer on the wood would be lighter than the stain inside of a can

Yes, well that depends on many factors like type of wood, how porous it is, etc. Don't forget to stir the stain very well before using too. All that muck at the bottom of the stain can should be fully incorporated with the solvent in order for the color to be what it truly is supposed to be.

What kind of cabinets are these? Howard Restore a Finish works well on the old oak cabinets that get that worn or water damaged look. Home Depot sells it.
