natto
Comments (31)"There are other studies showing that within Japan, the incidence of hip fractures varies by prefecture, and that there is an association that suggests that (again) natto has a protective effect." The previously linked paper notes that it has not been established that eating natto lowers the risk of hip fracture. Do you have studies to cite that make a definite claim in this regard? "But the idea that a food can have health benefits is not outrageous" Nor have I or anyone else here said so. It is always good to know if there is definitive evidence that 1) a food has such benefits, 2) it is palatable and cheaply and readily available, and 3) if there are alternative foods or supplements that supply the beneficial factor in a better or more palatable form. For instance - apple cider vinegar is touted by its enthusiasts as being a nutrient-rich food. Nutritionists, however, report that ACV is actually quite low in nutrients compared to other foods. "At the end of the day, we all need to decide to decide how strong the evidence is, and what the possible risks and benefits are from deciding to eat a particular food." And we've had food for thought here, both in the evidence suggesting a possible but still unproven benefit for eating natto regarding osteoporosis, and the warning that eating too much soy isoflavone (found in natto and other soybean products) might lower an estrogen protective effect against liver cancer. I'm not on the "SOY BAD" bandwagon like some who've been quoted in this forum, but there could be an advantage to supplying a vitamin K2 supplement without the rest of soybeans' components....See MoreBlood thinners question.
Comments (11)Aspirin doesn't work the same way and doesn't do the same thing as Warfarin. Warfarin is an old (no more drug-company patents) drug that many, many people take. It has almost no side effects other than thinning your blood. (So you needn't worry unless you will be playing football or other contact sport any tme soon!) If you are taking Warfarin and need surgery, your doctor will take you off the Warfarin and make other arrangements prior to and after the surgery. The only bother about it is that you must stick with a consistent diet and you will need to have your blood tested regularly to make sure your dosage is putting your blood within the level your doctor has prescribed. A consistent diet means that if you eat X amount of broccoli, or drink X amount of wine, you should do so regularly. For example, if you never eat broccoli, then one day eat a large portion of it, it will affect your blood "thin-ness". So, yes, there are food and other drugs that are contraindicated, but that doesn't mean you must necessarily avoid them. Only that you eat than with regularity. One important issue: most doctors are not equipped to handle long-term maintenance tests for drugs like Warfarin. There may be an "Anti-coagulation clinic" who your doctor will refer you to - the clinic will monitor your tests, bug you when you are overdue for a test, and let you know if you need to change your dose. Find out if there is such a clinic available to you and if so, definitely get your doctor to offload your Warfarin maintenance to the clinic. Good luck....See MoreFor Those of You who are taking Femara
Comments (19)I'm also not fond of the idea of taking Tamoxafin,as it gave my sister blood clots, and then she got pneumonia. That was 13 years ago and she is still ok.However she only had 1 breast removed and no lymph nodes at all.I had a double mastectomy, and 17 nodes removed in my right arm and 3 in my left.In my right side 4 of the 17 were positive, and the left side none were positive.I'll take what i need to take to keep this monster at bay,and guess i'll just have to suffer the consequences. Can't take aspirin as i already take a blood thinner as i still have my port in,2 years out from surgery. So far they say all my bone test are fine so far,and that's a good thing. The femera also makes my hair continue to fall out, anyone else have that problem?? Kathi...See MoreDoes anyone take Diovan HCT for high blood pressure?
Comments (7)I could not take it... I had a reaction to the HCTZ pat of the medication, hives. When I tried the Diovan alone w/o the HCTZ, my legs swelled up like balloons. Am now on Norvasc, seems to be ok. I am not a fan of combination medications, since I am sensitive to too many things. As I found out thru uncomfortable trial and error!...See Moreruthieg__tx
