ID Wetland Plant

The pictured plant was growing in a berm adjoining a wetland in Central Florida. I'm sure the soil was soppy. The stems seemed somewhat viny and the green foliage had a blue undertone. Rosy red flowers as pictured. The length of the berm seemed filled with the plant (along with others).

Hopeful that someone here may know what it is. Merely curious. There are definitely no wetlands in my yard! - June

Thank you for the ID, Carol. According to web info, this plant is very wide ranging - the Pacific islands, the Caribbean, etc. - and is not confined to wetlands. Ripened seed spew out, explaining their generous distribution along the length of the berm. - June

Ok, I'll bite. The first thought that comes to mind is Carphephorus paniculatus, but that isn't found naturally in Missouri. Which leads me to the closely allied genus of Liatris. So I'll guess Liatris aspera or Liatris pycnostachya. Both are native to Missouri, and both are found in moist areas. (Liatris spicata is also found in moist areas, but its stem lacks hair, which appears present in your photo.) Here is a link that might be useful: Liatris aspera

The photos are all of the same weed. It is not the Japanese Knotweed, but I found it on this website http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/pubs/midatlantic/phau.htm It is known as the "common reed" - very labor intensive removal, including chemical, but did not say what type. You really can't put too much trust in Internet photos for species that are sold for aquariums, because they are often entirely different from the same species in the wild. Leaves for Limnobium spongia can be floating, or emergent, and plants could easily be found on mud if water depth varies. Since I've never seen L. spongia, I'm not stubborn about the ID :). Lots of plants are native in Wisconsin that survive wet sites. The key is periodic flooding as most will not tolerate being wet all the time. Some that tolerate lowlands and wet in spring are: silver maple, river birch, speckled alder, nannyberry viburnum, black willow, sandbar willow, hackberry, swamp white oak, American linden, buttonbush, elderberries, tamarack, ironweed, red milkweed, blue flag iris ect. Some of these will tolerate more wetness than others. Speckled alder can practically grow in standing water it is so water tolerant. Bald cypress will take water well too and does survive in S.E. Wisconsin.

Yes, it considered a category II invasive, I believe. It just started showing up here about three years ago, probably from seeds in sod the county put down on the roadsides. Lots of new invasives came along with that.

Looks like a member of the Malvaceae. Going to look that up quick.
