James Hardie Smooth vs. Select Cedarmill
Comments (5)I wish someone would make a more subtle grained plank. We have Nichiha in a grained finish, and it looks like it was sand-blasted. On our dark color, it looks OK, but I wish it were more subtle. Smooth product also has a fake look, mostly because it is so much thinner than real clapboards....See MoreHardie board vs vinyl siding
Comments (19)Hi Diana, I had a vinyl product from Certainteed - Cedarboard insulated siding in a 7" height, installed on my shed and have lived with if for a year to see how I like it. After some time with it, I like it but not enough to want to have it installed on my home. It has a bit of a plastic look to it like all vinyl. After seeing some well done paint jobs on aluminum siding in the area, have decided to have my aluminum siding painted. I have seen to many homes in the area with vinyl siding where the vinyl shows buckling or warping. My aluminum siding lays very flat and so think painting will be a good choice. Comments (7)That's quite a nice design, Brea! The choice between smooth and textured Hardie is probably an aesthetic decision, nothing more. I installed smooth Hardie a couple of years ago (smallish two story house), here in rainy western WA. It took paint very well and has held up terrifically. Mildew and mold are common here too, typically on bare wood. I have not seen any on the Hardie. I can't answer your question about cleaning it, as I have not had to do so. I'm guessing the cleaning might be more a matter of the paint you choose, rather than the Hardie. Good wishes on your project! One thing perhaps worth noting: Hardie really must be installed to manufacturer specifications ... and boy oh boy does Hardie have specs!...See MoreTexturizing smooth Hardie boards
Comments (3)The contractors doing the job ordered all materials. One suggestion from a painter was to put the wood grain siding from Hardie over the smooth....See Morellcp93
