Two questions for two different succulents

So I've just now noticed this, but one set is starting to have unhealthy-looking stems. I recently transplanted them, and watered them very little, so are there any suggestions as to what I can do for them? They're getting some nice morning light right now.

And secondly, I'm not sure the exact term, but is that the growth of a second/new plant on this one? (towards the bottom, the cluster of leaves)

First plant looks okay to me, unless I am missing something. I would try to keep water off it, though.

Second plant is indeed pupping at the base. You are making it happy!

Hello there. Can I ask what is your compost made up of please? It looks very organic, I can see some perlite in it, but there appears to be no grit or much to give the plants sharp drainage. Has the container got holes in the base? Need a bit more info on your mix please :)

Take the hosta out and pot it up in a container soil and put it on your deck for a while and baby it. They will live outdoors over the winter potted up also. - I shove them under the deck, or you can put it in the garage but must water it monthly. Take a look a the roots when you dig it up - I bet the root system is tiny. It needs a chance to expand the root system.

Hey jean001, Thanks for your interest. They were planted in 2000. I wouldnt be surprised if it's a root issue. Just today (no lie) my wife and I finally threw in the towel on two white pineds that went in the ground as part of the same job. It took me an hour with a pickaxe and wire cutters to remove a stump root ball the size of a gallon of milk! 6+ ft. when my mom bought them in 2000. Plus the past 10 years in the ground and the root ball is that size? And why the wire cutters? Well the dolts that put them in didn't cut away any of the wire basket. Out of curiosity which of the two trees do you think is the one exhibiting the weakness? The curled up leaves? That's my thiught.. Any way thanks again!

Hiya and welcome to the forum. We hope you post often. :) Your banana yucca sounds impressive! They're famous for growing with a bent/prostrate sort of habit instead of upright like some other types. A lot of yucca can be propagated from stem cuttings, although a quick internet search didn't show anything for banana yucca, so it might be more resistant? I've propagated other yuccas from cuttings by cutting off a stem that has a nice rosette of foliage on it, stripping off the lower dried leaves if present, letting it air dry overnight or so, and then planting it in the ground, so that might be worth a try? Again though, I didn't see anyone listing that species as one that works from cuttings so you'll be taking a gamble. Let us know what you do and how it works out. I love red yuccas too (Hesperaloe parviflora). They do great in many parts of Arizona. Mine get water once a week in summer and then once a month in winter and they've done really well. agreed. Top one is definitely P. Afra Var. and second one looks like Crassula marginalis (calico kitten) I have both and got both from Lowes, although they were labeled correctly at my Lowes :)

I'm worried about those stalks since they're turning purple-ish and shriveling a little, one is worse than the other. And they're in Hoffman organic cactus and succulent soil mix (which is compost, limestone, sand, and peat moss) along with some aquarium gravel). The container doesn't have holes in the base, so I've been reluctant to heavily water.

As for the pupping plant, is there anything I should do about it, or let it do its thing?

The mix looks too dense, IMO. (Many commercially produced mixes are.). Most folks here will recommend "cutting" that mix with a substantial amount of gritty material to make the mix more free draining.

Using a pot lacking in drainage is a recipe for disaster. If you are particularly attached to that pot and wish to use it, drill (or melt if it is plastic) some holes in it or plant them in a pot that does have holes and nest it inside the blue one. (Though you will still want to thoroughly drain said pot before placing it in the blue one.)

I can't give advise on each of your plants as I don't grow any of them, but, I could advise on a new mix. It's just as we thought, the current mix is way to organic. If they were my plants I would use 2 parts aquarium gravel, 2 parts perlite, and 1 part of the mix you already have them in if those are the ingredients you have to hand but I'm not sure about the limestone as it could affect the ph. Plus I would pot them all individually in pots with holes.
