TV in Kitchen dilemma - cable outlet on wrong wall - help!

Hi, I have a cable outlet on the wall in the kitchen where I don't want the tv. I want the TV on the exact opposite side, which is the exterior wall facing my backyard. I want the tv inside a kitchen cabinetry that has no doors. There's a power outlet nearby, so that's not a problem. Just no cable outlet on that wall. So my dilemma is how do I make the cable tv work on that wall if I can't run wire (house is freshly painted). My basement is unfinished, but I don't know how to trace cables and such. I got quoted an outrageous amt by audio/video guy in NYC, so I want to attempt to do this on my own - even though I'm a technical newbie, I'm a quick learner. Thanks!

Unfortunately, this is probably not a good DIY project for a beginner. You have three choices:

1, Go straight through the wall and have exposed coax cable fastened to the exterior house wall.

2. Fish down from the attic.

3. Fish up from the basement.

The cable company will probably do this job for less than $100, if you are willing to go with option 1. You see this route taken all the time because it is fast and easy to do. I will never do this on my house because it usually looks very unsightly. Most cable companies won't even tell you options 2 and 3 even exist.

Options 2 and 3 may or may not be possible and will cost ~$50 more. Do you have access to the basement and attic? Fishing an exterior wall is always more difficult due to insulation which is present in exterior walls, but almost never in interior walls. A wall fish will take longer and will require an installer with patience and experience.

I'd call your cable company, tell them you need a "wall fish" outlet installed and hope you get a patient and experienced installer. Sign up for an early morning appointment. You don't want to be the last job of the day when the installer is thinking about dinner time and is eager to go home. Good luck.

coffee out my nose, thanks to fly... Seriously, though, if it was my DH, and he didn't want the TV mounted to the wall, I wouldn't do it myself as a "surprise." I'm sure your DH has good reasons for not wanting it wall mounted; have you asked him? Perhaps it's because you don't have studs in "traditional" locations. Post-and-beam houses are structurally different. Maybe he doesn't want it that high? If I were you, I'd buy or build a sturdier, larger cabinet or shelving system for the TV. We just moved our 52" flat screen TV to the cabinet DH just finished building, and I was terrified the entire 30 seconds because it felt so wobbly. I thought the TV was going to go over backwards. In your case, I would be very concerned about knocking it off that little cabinet. As far as location, an outlet that's controlled by a switch usually has one "constant hot" outlet and one controlled one. Just plug a lamp or night-light in to figure out which one is controlled by the wall switch, and then plug the TV into the other one. And, I am wondering how much someone who's practicing an instrument is going to be watching TV. ? If you're sitting at the keyboard, it would be very difficult to see the TV above the keyboard. I would place the TV where it's most convenient for watching TV.

Behind our TV is an electrical outlet and a cable outlet (the one with the little round cable thing that you screw the cord onto. The tv is plugged into both. The cable outlet runs into the closet on the left side of the photo. That is where all of our things are hooked up. The cable is screwed into a box, in the closet, which is made for remote sensors. There are "outlets" on the box, which you use to connect your dvd/vcr/satellite/surround sound into. The remote sensor is installed near the bottom left of the fireplace. But you can also get a sensor that just peeks out from your tv...very small and not noticeable. There is a basic cable wire (very cheap) that runs from the sensor on the wall, into the closet and also plugs into that same box as everything else. Then there are small sensors that you place on your dvd player/satellite receiver/surround sound. They just stick on the front of them. Now you can control all of your items even though you can't see them, via the remote sensor. I'm sure this sounds completely confusing, because I'm not good at explaining things like this. All of our wires do run through the walls, but you can also run them through the attic if you need to, or just do small holes, or even just "hide" the necessary cords. We have just one cable cord that goes from the box behind the tv into the closet, and then one cable cord that goes from the remote sensor on the wall into the closet. So we only really ran 2 cable cords. We purchased our supplies from smarthome.com. The whole setup was under $100.

Thanks Zep. In look at all of those holders it seems like they would have a bit of thickness even when flipped up. So maybe the plug strip won't really be in the way since I only get about a half inch or so of light rail anyway. Doesn't anyone's TV get completely concealed when flipped in the up position? RMTdoug, I should email you offline. We have to upgrade our entire network. Our old Dell is slow and out of space. We were thinking of going Mac but will probably want to stick with PC. Our multi-function printer is dead and the reviews on CNET and PCmag for the top printers all have negative user comments. We need a good scanner to reduce the mounds of paperwork we have, plus, it would be nice to print on card stock occasionally but I would want the quality good enough for printing out my resume. Then we also need NAS and a new big TV for the family room in addition to our media/TV/music strategy. I just hope our wireless router can handle all that, granted Sonos has its own wireless. I will look further into all of your suggestions - Chromeast, AppleTV or something similar, etc. And will try a spare lap top in the space just to see how PC vs. TV gets used. It's hard to know which one is best for us and yes, what can fit into a holder that can bend to be the least conspicuous is also important. It almost looks like the laptop/tablet holders are different from the TV holders.

Your sketch (or your builder's) has three separate, individual and unrelated elements: the walls, the fireplace and the casework for the TV. Nothing dominates--everything competes visually. Dominance is one principle for good design. Cpartist's sketch is much more unified: fireplace and casework are unified together and dominate the wall, leaving only a small portion of the wall visible. For increased dominance and unity, you might consider some type of fascia or crown molding which is in keeping with your house architecture. You could align it and run it full-width, across the top of the door and all casework. An option for the heavy-appearing masonry above the mantle would be to use wood paneling, finished to match your casework. In choosing your design and finishes don't forget to coordinate the door and frame to the left, if there is one. As for the TV, I'm not sure how far away the kitchen actually is from the TV location, but even if you can adequately see the video, I'm not sure you will be able to hear the audio, unless you have wired speakers in the kitchen. What are the chances of a well located and designed TV in the kitchen--perhaps a flip down flat screen under an upper cabinet? Good luck with your project.

I've not personally tried any of these. If I were to purchase on of these, I'd check the Amazon reviews very carefully before purchase. From my quick scan of reviews, opinions were mixed. With this you will need to connect the cable box and HD transmitter to your cable TV. The receiver will connect to the TV HDMI port. This is a more complex solution with additional technology risks, but may work just fine and solve your problem.

How about using a PC or a tablet (or iPad) via Wifi for TV viewing? That's what we do in our house, it gives you an instant TV location anywhere you want it.

Peerless makes a HDMI wifi transmitter & receiver, works wirelessly over 50' for digital video & audio (HDMI). Combine that with a UHF remote control (so you don't have to point at the Cable or Satellite box)
