Ordering appliances from a large store (Sears in this case)
Comments (28)Our refrigerator died suddenly and we had to get a new one right away. I really hate having to buy something fast but it was either that or live out of an ice chest that my husband pulled out of the garage. We spent 3 days checking out Sears, Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, Pacific Sales, The Great Indoors, and a few locally owned appliance stores. ItÂs surprising how all the refrigerators started to look the same after a while but we finally decided on the brand/model we wanted. Now it was down to price. Over the last 1 1/2 years, we have had to replace all our appliances except for our stove. All have lasted us between 15-17 years so I canÂt complain. We bought our new front load washer/dryer from The Great Indoors. The price couldnÂt be beat by any other store and the salesperson was so helpful that when our dishwasher bit the dust a few months later, we went back. Once again he gave us the best price and great/friendly/helpful service. Our third appliance to go was our oven. Again we shopped all over and ended up buying at Pacific Sales. The price was the best and the salesperson was a pleasure to deal with, very professional and courteous. Our oven was installed last week. As for the refrigerator, Pacific Sales didnÂt carry the model we wanted. Although I shop a lot at Best Buy, their salesperson did nothing for us so they were out. The salesperson we encountered at Sears bent over backwards to try and help us. We didnÂt make it easy for him because we were so undecided but he stuck in there. We came back 3 times and he was very patient and understanding. Sears was having a big sale but someone else said that The Great Indoors was having a huge 1 day sale. We ended up getting a better price at The Great Indoors but since the Sears guy was so kind, I wanted to give him one last chance. We let him know that the decision was up to him for the sale. He beat the price and we got free delivery. He really earned the sale and we got a fantastic price. The refrigerator was delivered 2 weeks ago. We started having a problem with the doors squeaking right away. Called service and they came out very fast. They fixed the problem but it reappeared a few days later. Again service came out right away but this time they recommended replacing the refrigerator. Wow, how honest can you get? Most repair places would string you along for quite a while before admitting that you got a bad appliance. We should be getting our new refrigerator next week. Sears gets an A+ for both sales and service....See MoreBuying from big box vs. appliance store
Comments (18)I think some of the people commenting are missing your question. Manufacturers of plumbing fixtures and lawn mowers for example make "less expensive" lines which they pour into the big box stores. Then, at show rooms or manufacturer stores, they fill will higher end products. For example a John Deere mower will cost you more at the dealer, not because they jacked up the price, but because it's a higher end model that at the Home Depot. Most people don't wanna spend $6,000 on a mower so John Deere makes less expensive mowers. Ditto for plumbing fixtures. Your plumbing show room and Lowe's may indeed carry Moen, Delta etc. but those companies make less expensive faucets for the big box stores. There are more plastic pieces for example. That faucet may last you 5 years, but if you spend just a little more at the plumbing show room, your facet will have more metal pieces and last much longer. All a manufacturer's products will be decent, but the low end stuff ends up at the big box stores for consumers who wanna make a change but are on a budget. I see no reason why appliance manufacturers don't do the same. If you compare model number to model number exactly, then you will get the same product. However, I'm sure the big box stores and Best Buy don't even carry the high end stuff. So if appliances are anything like mowers or plumbing fixtures, you get what you pay for and YES, it's better to buy appliances at an appliance center instead of the big box stores but only because they'll have available units that the big box stores don't even get which would include more "meant to last" products....See MoreWord to the wise re: AJ Madison Appliance Installation
Comments (5)You're right, Sophie, you wouldn't expect a long distance truck driver to also be a highly skilled appliance installer. Which is why I'm surprised that AJ Madison calls their truck drivers "certified installers." I just wanted to warn people that no matter what AJ Madison tells you, they probably cannot provide installation, beyond the most basic, for your replacement appliance. They're a great source if you have a contractor doing a remodel, though, and if you're outside of NYS, no sales tax. Of course I wouldn't expect local stores to come out and install the unit you bought at AJ Madison, but you can sometimes get them to come down to the AJ Madison price for the appliance. And you're also correct - it isn't easy to find your own handyman who can do carpentry and electrical or plumbing and is willing to do just a small installation. That's why DB was happy when AJ Madison offered installation, because he could buy from them without finding his own installer. Which he has now had to do anyway. This was just a case of live and learn for my DB, and I was hoping to help other people avoid making the same mistake....See Morebest stores to buy appliances from?
Comments (19)FWIW, I have bought certain items from ABT but they were not the lowest price when I was purchasing all my appliances recently - even with the nonpayment of sales tax factored in which the Supreme Court recently ruled on. Perhaps if one lives in Chicago and ABT is the local supplier, it's different. When you are buying as many fairly expensive appliances as you are, you have tremendous bargaining power and will probably get a better overall deal from a local supplier. I got pricing from a true local appliance store (one store) and two small local chains and one national chain (Pacific) and was able to negotiate a great deal with Pacific. As I posted, they price matched everything plus threw in free installation and delivery. Installation was theoretically not insignificant for me - wall oven; microwave drawer; hood vent; water line for refrigerator; washer and dryer; dishwasher....See Moresjhockeyfan325
