Word to the wise re: AJ Madison Appliance Installation

When my DB's electric cooktop died, he decided to switch to induction, and he needed a new wall oven, too. He ordered from AJ Madison, and they told him they would arrange installation of both "at the time of delivery by certified installers." They said installation would cost $125 for the cooktop and $175 for the oven, but that he would pay the trucking company directly on installation. When the truck arrived, the deliverymen disavowed any knowledge of a planned installation. They said they thought they were supposed to give an estimate for installation, and they didn't have any of the tools or kits necessary for actual installation. DB let them leave and contacted AJ Madison, who contacted the truckers. The truckers told AJ Madison that they couldn't do the installation because the openings were the wrong size for the appliances and more work was needed on the cabinetry than they could do. Since they did not measure any openings or review any installation manuals (the boxes were not opened) and since the old wall oven was still in situ, this could not have been the case. AJ Madison apologized for the "miscommunication" between DB and the truckers, and offered him a $50 credit on his card for his inconvenience. DB found someone else to do the installation next week.

AJ Madison didn't do too awfully badly here - they responded very quickly, and $50 is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. OTOH, AJ Madison offered installation, installation did not happen, and now installation is delayed. I expect AJ Madison offers installation as a way to further compete with local appliance stores, who do actually provide installation on delivery. If you need an appliance installed, though, it might be safer to try to negotiate with the local store to get the AJ Madison price on the appliance and pay them to do the installation. You'll probably get it sooner, too. If you do order from AJ Madison, you might be better off to arrange your own installer.
