Get the part number of the ignitor for the oven and replace it. That is almost certainly your problem. I think the burner state is serendipitous, possibly an artifact of a weak ignitor. Replace the ignitor first; it is the prime suspect in a lazy lighting oven.

This is all about "performance" -- range performance, car performance, cooking performance. This is also about status, fantasy and guilt. It also might be about property value. Some very famous cooks didn't have "high performance" equipment. And it's amazing how home cooks in other countries don't have all this fancy equipment and yet manage to turn out delicious meals. I've had wonderful food cooked in a fireplace and on a hot plate. If you can cook, a high performance range makes it easier and can give you more control and eliminate a struggle against a range (which is certainly annoying). If you can't cook well, and don't learn to season, no appliance will help.

If you haven't done so already, you might reset the breaker. Even a 15 year old GE range has a control board and it's possible it's just out of wack from an electrical jolt. Leave the breaker off for about 30 seconds. That's where I'd start - always try the easy and free stuff first. The oven igniter or the relay for the oven may need replacement. Get spouse to lift the oven floor, maybe also take off the drawer and take a look around. He should be able to watch the ignition sequence. It might help. When our 7 year old profile died, we did that - found a bad igniter with burnt wiring and rusted out areas around it down there. That's when the repair started to be pretty expensive. If yours isn't burnt, the igniter is pretty inexpensive and an easy surgery. It's just as likely that the control board is dying and you need a new one. I've never done that kind of surgery, at 15 years old, it's pretty much due though. I always laughed at a relative's jennaire. She spends about $500 every year to replace its board. Just so you know, this is pretty much the entirety of what I know. I got through most of life cooking on old ranges with pilot lights - crap, but I never had a range repaired until this year.

No idea how I stumbled on this post....but I did! The burner you showed is an alcohol burner....needs fuel to burn. You need to buy "chafing dish fuel" or denatured alcohol and remove the lid of the thing-ey that holds the wick...pour some in, replace the top....wait a few minutes for it to soak up into the wick and then light it. That little cone shaped doo-dah is the douter....the snuffer...the thing that puts out the flame. Looks like a lovely chafing dish! Linda C
