Need dormer window treatment advice.

We have the older style shutters (1 inch?) downstairs and need something in the three dormer windows. The one in the center is above a two-story foyer and not accessible without a ladder. Right now it has no window treatment. The two on each side are bedrooms and have roller shades as a temporary measure. I'd like all three to look the same from the outside (although I realize that right now the shutters downstairs are not consistent!).

Advice?

I think as long as you keep the exterior color consistent, it's fine. The window over the foyer isn't going to match unless you're going to get up and down a ladder every night to raise or lower a shade, which you're not. In that case, I'd just use a fully retractable window cover, like the roller shade or duettes so that, at least, during the day when you're most likely to see them, the windows will be largely clear.

If you do choose to put a valance over the bedroom windows to hide the shades, then you may wish to put one of the same shape over the foyer window as well...they don't need to match color on the interior, but make sure the exterior lining is the same.

You can put a shade that has a control from the floor (not cheap) but doable.

Thanks everyone. I know it seems great to have all these windows and I am definitely not complaining, but we realize we could have had almost the same effect and light with 8 instead of 10 - and saved a lot of money (in cost of windows and framing) but the architect shows you the drawings and you think wow, that looks good, and you don't think about whether or not it will be practical in use. Our architect came up with that to remedy an really unfortunate addition done by former owner. They stuck on a weirdly designed very 1980's round addition to a 1920's Dutch Colonial - but in a completely different style from original and tried to make it look somewhat like a lighthouse. From the outside, it just looked like a big round mass of stucco, now it looks much better. But I digress... Anyway, that's a good idea about the remote control shades/blinds. Do you know if they work well over time. I like technology, but just want to make sure they are not repair prone. I guess I can search and see if there are any threads about that.

Keep in mind that if you are not doing custom you have to work with stock curtain lengths. Measure from the floor to the ceiling and from the floor to a midpoint between the top of the window trim and the ceiling. Both are good spots for the rod. After you measure you can figure out which stock length works for your windows. If you need an extra inch or two you can add length with curtain rings. Cellular shades are usually inside mount.

I'd suggest a solid with a texture for the drapery panels. I'd also recommend doing the panels as stationary panels and add roller shades or honeycomb shades on the windows that follow the shape of the bay.

I have curtains from S&N in one room; they're beautiful and high quality. I also have lots of shades and one curtain from Blinds.com and have been very happy with them. You can get cordless woven shades in a pretty large width, and they always have sales. We also splurged and got motorized shades from Hunter Douglas for a couple of rooms, and I feel so fancy every time they open and close on schedule. But window treatments are surprisingly expensive!
