I leave my three gallons out and they do just fine. I group them together on the ground, out of the wind.

One year I had 30 babies (all Westerland) that I had rooted in one gallon pots. I put them next to the house on south-facing side and covered them with leaves. I only lost 1 or 2.

Hi and welcome here.. Based on what you said, "Winters are quite mild" "I tranplanted from the Four Winds nursery container to a Tapla Mix in to a slightly larger pot. The tree was not overly root bound". Here is what I suggest..:-) Continue to fertilize at a lower dose than you are doing at "every" watering, 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water, and don't forget to use vinegar... A continual feed at such a low rate will continue the balance of nutrients to your tree through the warmer spells,when your plant needs it, and not over burden it.Everytime the soils warms above 55 degrees, the roots are looking for nutrients, NO nutrients, therefore the yellowing leaves. Fruitnut is right. When roots due get cold, as in below 55 degrees on a consistant basis, day and night, they stop looking for nourishment. But when they awake, the tree is hungry and you should have something there in the soiless mix that we are using for the taking..:-).. A weakend plant due to improper fertilizing also invites pests. If you are using Al's mix, which I do, the unused fertilizer will just be flushed out and never over burden your plants anyway. There is also no build of salts... There is a constant supply of nutrients in winter to ALL citrus in ground from organic matter readily available when the trees decide they need to feed. Soil is alive. If you withhold all together, you will be looking at nothing more than non-nutrative mix.. Hope this helps...If you need proof of this suggestion, I can provide the pics...:-)

Out of necessity I grow all my vegetables in very large pots. They are on the East side of the house so get morning sun and some get all-day sun. I put the less-heat-tolerant ones next to the house where they are shaded in the afternoon, and the ones that love sun closer to the fence line. And, of course, they all got daily water and a monthly dose of organic fertilizer. Last summer I had japanese-style eggplant, peppers, beans, a variety of summer squashes, herbs, and tomatoes. This winter I have peas, cauliflower, broccoli, kale and chard. I had luck with tomatoes last summer for the first time. I bought cultivars that are bred to grow in the heat: SummerSet and Heat Meister. They were in full sun, but up against a wooden fence that, I think, deadened some of the heat. I had read that Japanese Eggplants do better here in our heat. So far that is correct; and, one plant is going on it's 3rd summer and the other its second. I just cut back the peppers as an experiment to see if they'll come back as well. I try to grow plants "up" if possible to save room. I even discovered that summer squash can be tied-up to climb a pole, which saves walk-way space. Good luck!

Any rose that typically maintains a shot, shrubby, dense growth habit is fine for a container. The main issue is that you need to water faithfully and feed more often, since watering leaches nutrients from the pot. We recently moved to a zone 9 area, leaving behind 280+ roses in an extensive zone 6a garden (several of which were in containers) and are now growing a handful of roses on our patio until we settle into our permanent home. We are currently growing everyytrhing in congtainers and having excellent luck with Sugar Moon, Frances Meilland, and Memorial Day. Mister Lincoln has not been a happy camper and if he doesn't perk up soon, he wil find a spot in a frined's garden and we'll replace him with something else. We are looking forward to adding a couple of Austins to our collection. We just planted Autumn Sunset, a climber, that we hope will grow along the railing -- our sole reason for choosing this rose is emotional... but we'll see how it does. My advice is to consider the minifloras or do what we will be doing as we look over the options for Austin roses and that is to look in the description for the size you can expect the rose to grow to. Shrubs with a maximum 3 foot spread and height tend to be the best candidates. But I'll be following this thread for ideas as well!

In zone 9 you shouldn't have to worry much. I'd put them in the warmest spot in your yard and they should be OK. Roses can take temps down to about 28 degrees without any damage.

Thanks you guys! I feel a little better about leaving them out for the winter now. I had major surgery last week so I am not even supposed to be lifting anything over 5 lbs. I do have help to lift the heavy things and get my greenhouse organized but still...the less we have to do right now the better lol.
