Rainforest Green Soapstone from M. Tex
Comments (36)eandhl: I'm in Fairfield County, so it's not a big deal for me to go to NJ. Based on the amount of time I ran around looking at stones and trying to get accurate information, I still feel it's important to see your stone before it's fabricated. Perhaps if you do more digging, you might find someone with a good selection closer. One fabricatorI went to told me they would order slabs for me to look at, without any obligation to purchase it if I didn't like it. I didn't follow through because I know how picky I am and won't be satisfied until I'm convinced I've made the "perfect" choice. Yes, even I find myself to be a pain, LOL! Since M Tex is mainly wholesale, perhaps you can call them and ask who they sell to in your area. That way, you can have the benefit of M Tex's knowledge base and know what you're getting. The local fabricator might be able to get them to take a pix of several slabs and email them to you. I chose my White America quartzite slab for my island at Dente Trading, an importer in NJ, and they held it for a few days until my local fabricator was able to send them a purchase order. This worked very well and the fabricator did a great job for $2100. Another fabricator quoted me $3100 for the island using the same slab I had on hold! Good luck! Sorry for taking so long to get back, but I've kind of random with my time on GW....See MoreHas anyone ever bought their marble sight unseen?
Comments (16)Betsy- We are in Geneva and a place called MarbleTech (link below) has a location here, but I am seeking additional recs for pricing, selection, etc. Their site says they recently expanded from 5 Chicago locations to 11. Note: It seems their showroom locations are often not called MarbleTech (e.g., Geneva's is 'Granite Countertops'). Their slabs are in their Crystal Lake showroom and you can view pics of the slabs on their site, but the person I spoke to said it won't be up to date with the shipment they just got in today. He said there was a lot of marble in it. In fact, he said their demand for marble has gone up recently. (I chuckled to myself thinking it's all the people who follow this forum getting the courage to follow their hearts and put marble in their kitchens!) Anywho, I stopped by tonight to ask some basic questions and the person working explained to me that they are both a supplier and fabricator. That's lucky for me, I think. He also said that they can *easily* get something from another place (they don't have any calacatta or danby as of now) if they don't have it-- w/o any sort of commitment from me. Said they swap slabs all the time. Try saying that 3x really fast! I need to get further clarification on how exactly it works... Not sure if they would, for example, get a slab of danby from Stone City (thanks for that rec!) and then I could see it, or if they would want me to go to Stone City to pick the slab of danby and then they would 'swap'. He made it sound like it's not an additional cost. I'm tired & not sure this is making sense now, but I plan on talking to someone at the store tomorrow who I trust to understand it better. I want to start looking at slabs!!! At any rate, I am checking back tomorrow when the person I spoke to originally a couple of months ago (when I started scoping my remodel) will be in. She was fabulous and was 110% supportive of my choice to do honed white marble and even offered further encouragement! Needless to say I trust her and will get additional clarification on all of this, what they have, what I want and how to see it, etc. (And her name is Betsy-- go figure!) I will let you know if I learn anything useful. Thanks again and hope this helps you too! p.s. Do I only get an email of a response to my question if it's a thread I actually started? I had to dig to find this again and then saw your response. Sorry to be such a newbie here! Here is a link that might be useful: Marble Tech...See MoreAnyone order soapstone slabs from afar? Advice?
Comments (3)oh, how I know your pain! I am in Maryland and searched for months and months for *black* soapstone. I fell in love with my Brazilian Black sample from MTex and loved my Mumbai Grey also. There are very few places that carry soapstone around here and those that do only carry the green varieties. One location actually gets their slabs from MTex, but only choose to carry greens :(. I wanted black soapstone only on my perimeter counters to pair with calacatta on my island. We contacted MTex and priced out having my fabricator send them a template and MTex would do everything except install. I would need to have my local fabricator install. They have a 30 sq. ft. minimum for this and I only needed 22 sq. ft. The price for my material and shipping was based on the 30 ft. minimum and was right around $2K. Installation would be on top of that. I will say that MTex was wonderful to work with and was willing to send pictures of their slabs for my approval. One day while visiting my fabricator, who also carries a granite and marble inventory, I tripped over a leftover slab of cambrian black antique. He gave me the material for a rediculously inexpensive remnant price ($45 sq. ft!) and I just couldn't pass it up. Perhaps he knew he was making plenty off of the 50 plus feet of calacatta ;). I would try calling MTex, explaining your situation, and ask for pictures of the actual slabs in their inventory - they were very understanding and willing to work with me. GOOD LUCK!!!...See MoreSoapstone is ordered
