Options for lightening/removing deck stain
Comments (1)after several unsuccesful tries with using strippers from local paint stores, I found this the product I linked to. I tried a bottle to give it a try. It worked great and so I bought a case to do the rest of the house. I had a couple decades of different oil based stains on redwood siding. I would give it a try. It would be best to try it on a sample area if possible. stain a board before it arrives. Let us know how it worked. Comments (5)General makes a poly gel varnish that would do what is suggested above. It would not necessarily make it easier to apply, though, since the viscosity will remain the same; it would just weaken the color; become more transparent. That gel stain sets very rapidly is a known issue. On doors, you want to begin with the panels, finish them to your satisfaction, then wipe down any overage onto the stiles and rails before staining them, and then keep any excess stain off the previously-done panels, because fresh stain will re-dissolve the bits you did earlier, and it is very hard to blend it back in. Comments (10)are the doors naturally stained? I can't tell if it's a decent job from the photo. Honestly, it doesn't look like anything special. Up to you. personally, I dislike wood trim unless it's large oak in a craftsman. I'd paint everything. having black windows w/the wood trim,,,,no. I'd replace it with something updated, but that's me. black windows and black trim is an option. these are thicker than yours, which look better black windows/doors and white trim. Either one of these options look amazing. don't even think of keeping your old wood trim w/the new items. you could always do the doors black and white trim \ I'd also remove the paneling and do drywall....See MoreLighten or remove new stain on cedar siding?
Comments (28)I do not mean to hijack your post, but it seems like a good place to add another example. We are dealing with this exact same issue. Bright red stain on brand new cedar siding after being VERY clear we did not want red at all costs. Our contractor used 2 coats the same day he put the boards up. Besides the ridiculously ugly color, I am unsure what problems we should anticipate, as I am reading there should only be 1 coat and that waiting for the wood to dry before putting a stain on is essential. I will post any solutions we try-hopefully that will help others....See Moreklem1
