Thin a stain to lighten the color?

I needed to stain a pedestal for a vase. I had a can of
Varathane stain, Walnut, oil based, around that I have used before and thought
would be the right color, as I used it for a small project in the same room before and
checked the color of that first. I write
the date when I buy a can on it, and this was purchased in 2009. The wood itself
is walnut, but needed to be a bit darker / redder to match the furniture in the room.

I applied the stain and saw quickly that it was going to be
too dark. Instead of waiting I immediately wiped it down to remove what of the stain
did not soak in. Then did the same using turpentine. It did not lighten up
much.

I think the stain in the can became concentrated. It’s not
huge deal for this small pedestal being too dark, but I have another project coming
up that is more important that I want this color for: but not this dark /
saturated.

I’ve never thinned stain before, but is that the answer? Add
some turpentine? Thanks.
