Soapstone belong in a modern kitchen?
Comments (11)Remodelfla, we seem to be of the same mind. I really don't like dark countertops (I wanted white coutertops originally... until I saw the pictures on this forum and remembered that I do like the feel of Soapstone). Soapstone just seem to call out to us... I love the feel of it and matt finish. I've gone round and round with my design and now it's crunch time... I have to make some decisions. I'll try to post some pictures but not sure how to post the layout. I'll see what I can do. The fireplace is red brick. Don't get me wrong... my KD has been dead on about everything so far. She's great! But there are so many options out there. I've been reading the threads on this forum and you guys are so creative and helpful. You're right about just going with what we like. We don't really care too much about resale since we plan on being here for the long run. My DH and I care more about function than anything else... but at the same time, we want it to look nice. Thanks for the responses. It makes me feel better about just going with what we like and make it work....See Morehelp w/ kitchen lighting plan - x-post
Comments (6)Thanks, davidtay, I tweaked my plan per advice from a rep at my local lighting place (she knows her stuff, should have worked with her from the beginning). Her suggested can placement for the area without upper cabs is pretty much what you suggest. (see link to see my kitchen forums thread and the updated plan). As for a regular pattern, I've got that going, sort of. My sink to DW cab to fridge cab cans are in a MOL straight line, just at a diagonal from everything else. Can't be helped. A regular pattern would not be functional and I nearly always choose function over form. btw, I have no idea what you mean by disc lights. Are these like puck lights mounted on the ceiling, not in it? We'll have ceiling repair elsewhere so floating new texture is in the budget. A little more repair won't be a big deal. Comments (19)Thanks, bmore! I tried to find your kitchen reveal thread and couldn't. I'd love to see pics of your lights and their placement in your kitchen. TIA! Thanks, cindallas! The cab next to the oven column has a base and an upper cab that is 15" or 16" above the counter and pulled forward so that its face is even with the base cab face. It will be similar to this set-up, except that the toaster oven cubby will only be 19 1/2" deep (the toaster oven, inc handle, will pretty much fill the space front to back). [Contemporary Kitchen[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/contemporary-kitchen-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_709~s_2103) by Charlotte Appliances DCI Home Resource I hadn't planned on adding UCL lighting here since it wouldn't do much beyond light the top of the toaster oven. The toaster oven has a lighted control panel so we won't have a problem reading temp, settings, etc. I realized that I'm adding 2 additional can lights to the kitchen so yes, definitely on the dimmer switch! I can't wait to see my kitchen either, Carol! =) The lighting rep recommended the 10" back from the front. I forgot to ask her if that was OC (on center) or to the front edge of the can but since we're talking about 2", I decided not to worry about it and go with the front to back position of my can in the corner above the windows since not repositioning it will save us a bit of $$. There won't be any work counter in the area next to the ovens, only a shallower than standard counter for the toaster oven. Everything else is floor to ceiling cabs so lighting in front of it is preferred. The can above my fridge and fridge cab was placed way too close to the cab face creating glare on the cab and shadows where I don't want them. Also, it's how our current cans are placed and it's worked well for 20+ yrs. Good luck with your kitchen planning!...See MoreDWs: Miele, Bosch, Kenmore or KitchenAid. Which one? help! xpost
Comments (21)So glad to see more people post their experience with their machines. Thank you! alexamorrie, good to hear you're happy with your Kenmore Elite. I liked our old DW but I have to admit that I also like the 3rd tray Bosch and Miele feature. We always have a lot of flatware, spatulas, knives and such, more than we could fit in the flatware baskets in our old machine. Our old Kenmore had a small, long basket at the back of the top tray that came in handy but the new Kenmores don't have that, unfortunately. Buehl, good to hear from another happy Bosch owner. Thanks for letting me know that your dishes fit. I'm familiar with Pfaltzgraff (our previous dishware was Pfaltzgraff) so I know it's roughly the same thickness as our current Fiestaware. Thanks, rococogurl, for answering my question. I don't know how often I'll fold tines down or lift sections out but it would be nice to have that flexibility. Thanks, somersetlass, glad to hear you liked your Mieles. I'm glad you've had good experiences with your KAs, catbuilder. Our Kenmore badged KA was great, the previous KA not nearly as good. That said, neither lasted much beyond 10 yrs. And that's just crazy! Seriously, when did a 10 yr appliance lifespan become the norm? Karenseb, glad to hear you're happy with your Bosch. I'd love it if you'd take a pic of it in action. I'm curious to know what you mean by " more versatile double sided utensil rack." Thanks! sjhockeyfan, I think our old DW had fold down tines that we never folded down. But since the tines on the Bosch and Miele aren't quite as generously spaced as our old Kenmore, it might be an issue for us when we wash casserole dishes and fry pans. I think I'll need to take another trip to the appliance store to look at the machines again. A2, you are awesome for posting a pic of your Miele DW in action! I can't believe how much you fit in it! Do you remember which model it is? You mentioned on your 3rd year anniversary thread that you had a service call on the machine. What was it for? Thank you, everyone!...See Morelaughablemoments
