Overwintering a zone 7 perennial in zone 5

Would this be possible if garage-stored? I've stored potted my-zone hardy perennials and shrubs for years in an unheated garage, I've got the method down pat.

I'm wondering if it would work for a zone 7 perennial, though? I want to overwinter salvia "Mystic Spires", which is an annual up here - what a tremendous performer! I took cuttings last year, grew a mother plant, and took cuttings from her for my stock this year. It was a hassle, though, trying to keep them alive in the house without running the light cart. So, I'm late to the party this year with the cuttings (I took a handful, but the growth is not new growth, so we'll see...), and like I said the cuttings were a hassle anyway.

I have to decide whether to ditch the plants for the season or try to overwinter - what do you think?
