Miele induction over miele wall oven
Comments (7)I saw on the Fagor web site that they allow their induction cooktop to be installed above their oven. In general, if your installation does not A.) insulate between the two and also does not B.) provide for adequate air ventilation under the cooktop, then the generator inside the induction cooktop will get hot, and sometimes very hot. Some people cook all the time, their oven is hot and under the cooktop would be hot too. Heat, high heat, is what causes premature death in fine-grained circuitry, like electronics and induction heat devices. Not immediate death but a clear positive correlation exists, over the long term with large numbers. The induction circuitry itself generates some heat inside itself, which can be called waste heat since it is not the heat energy in the pot, it is in the device underneath the vitroceramic panel. This explains why the product needs an air space underneath it. It is to help that waste heat get spread out into the air i.e. leave the device instead of accumulating and reaching ever higher temperatures. I doubt any manufacturer would want to express a blanket opinion that one can just plop such a heat-producing device on top of a stove which can also produce a lot of waste heat which MIGHT be trapped inside the same cavity as the induction cooktop.... It would be a problem to start issuing advisory notices on how to separate the two, i.e. how much insulation if any and how to manage the air intake in the air slot... So my feeling is that the customer has to understand the various factors and direct his installer accordingly. You want to A.) allow waste heat from the oven to go somewhere other than "Up" so this means (to me) an airtight separator plate between the two, ideally an insulator, and you want B.) to allow for some moving air in that airslot under the induction device. Whether the air slot is X inches or not is less of a big deal than whether air can remove itself and get replenished; this prevents it from getting too hot. Comments (25)gma_j, I see now you were referring to setting the probe temperature. I haven't used my Miele probe; I use the speed oven for smaller things, where a probe is less useful. But it really does snap in place with a loud click; so if yours didn't, that could be the problem. Larger things generally go into my E'lux oven; that probe works fine. The speed oven pre-heats quickly, so if something fits its faster to cook it there. Its useful for re-heating (use MasterChef, if you know the weight), as well as stuff like baked potatoes (in combination mode), and for roasting, braising, or convection baking small portions. I've rarely used defrost, or broil (except to finish browning something like ribs). The Miele's manuals leave much to be desired. While we wait for mojavean or someone smart to write a decent Miele speed oven cookbook, a variety of recipes on the Miele site can get you started on some dishes (see link). Comments (11)Hi to all who responded to my OP. I wanted to update you all in the event you have issues that need to be resolved. I called Miele right after Christmas and scheduled a service call asking specifically that the tech bring some sort of tool to check the oven temps. I also asked that the $175 fee be waived since this has been an ongoing problem. The techs were here (the same ones who were here last yr....I kidded them about this being an annual event and the one remembered me as the "cookie lady" because the last complaint was around my cookie baking time. Anyway, they checked the oven temps in several areas...all checked out accurately (unbelievable), they pulled the ovens from the wall to be sure they were getting adequate ventilation...(installation was perfect). They checked all the settings and programs (no faults) So they decided that only thing they could do at this point was to get approval from a supervisor to replace the bottom elements in both ovens as well as the electronic components. (YEA!!!)Luckily I had pictures of some rolls I had baked at Easter last yr. I put three trays in the oven at the same time and the top tray burned while the other two were quite light. They finally agreed that the oven is not baking as it should. A picture is worth a thousand words!!!! The one tech said he has seen the problem before and the replacement of those parts was the solution. So I am hopeful that after next Tuesday, my ovens will be working properly and perfectly. So thank you all for encouraging me to continue to complain to Miele. They didn't charge the service fee even though the ovens are out of warranty. They were very nice about the whole thing. If you are having problems, take some pictures of the food that didn't come out the way it should have. Those pictures seemed to have made my case. loves2cook4six, I had an oven thermometer in the oven when the tech arrived and I told them that from what I could see the differencee between the oven and the thermometer is about 25-50 degrees. Again they told me they will never give you an accurate reading and they took the thermometer out of the oven. I really wanted to see how hot the oven was on the SEARING setting because I never get a good sear on any meat I do on auto roast. It sure is not anywhere near 425+. So that is the update. Thanks again to all.. Cotehele, I almost got Monogram appliances but went with the Miele...Hope you get your problem resolved. Comments (19)@Amy Cantu We've been in our house for 6 mo now and I really like the GE Monogram oven. I haven't actually used the speed oven functionality of the speed oven. Just the microwave. And even then, we just use the add 30 sec option. I need to sit down with the manual and experiment with it. Unfortunately, using the speed oven is not as simple as just turning it on. It's pretty complex. I remember when I tried the speed oven at my friend's house it was really hard, and I thought I'd need to dedicate some serious experimentation to getting it to work for me, and doubted that I would ever bother using it as an oven except for Thanksgiving, which hasn't happened yet. My motivation to learn how to use it has been even less than I expected, so I'm sorry to say I can't report back. I also haven't tried using the oven probe functionality for the oven (haven't cooked a roast yet). Need to find the oven probe along with the speed oven manual! But I have done a ton of baking and roasting of vegetables and have been pleased. We were living in a rental house with a viking range and the GE monogram oven is 1000x better than whatever model of viking oven came with the range in the rental. Much more even. I've done two cakes side by side and they came out beautifully without the need to rotate. With a sheet of cookies I notice that sometimes a corner might brown a little quicker than another corner, but not so much that I really need to worry about rotating the pan halfway through. Broiler also works great--I've been making a lot of toast to go with steak tartare and an entire pan filled with toast toast 100% evenly under the broiler--hooray!...See Morerococogurl
