Comments (22)Hi Iso! I feel for you about the cool weather you have down there. Hubby and I do drive down that way a lot, and every time we drove down on the 5, it turned overcast once we've pass SJC. But once we went inland from Oceanside, it turned sunny again! You would just have to find the most exposed spot in your yard for your plumies (some spot against a wall, facing west, with no trees in the way). I don't have Red Sparkle but I've seen it posted here and remember the picture being beautiful. I believe Red sparkle is not a JJ variety. I'm not sure if Calif sunset and Heart's Desire are related (I've heard that a lot of JJ's plants are seedlings of Penang Peach). Both have the thick petals (with that notch like you said), but I can say that H.D. is not at all a prolific bloomer like Calif. Sunset. Are you going to the plant sale in San diego Labor day weekend? I might be there on the saturday. It would be neat if we can meet!...See MoreBest rose standards for N. Calif 9b climate
Comments (11)I am certainly outside of your area, and I am not sure what kind of availability you have there. Your selections may be somewhat limited to what you can find locally. But I have greatly appreciated my Austin standards more than some of the HTs, because they are bushier, and the shape is more gentle. This varies of course. If you have a chance to look at the bush forms before selecting, I would suggest doings so before choosing. One of my HT standards has very straight, stiff branches, which sometimes looks severe, instead of a gentle round shape. Iceberg for example makes a brilliant standard rose. My favorite standard is Winchester Cathedral, but it is not among the most fragrant of the Austins. There is little scent. No matter, it is a lovely shape and the blooms are often a surprise, occasionally streaked with pink. I rescued it from a bargain bin at the end of the sale season, and it has certainly repaid me handsomely....See MoreRoses from N. Calif wine country
Comments (22)Thank you to all for your comments! JasmineRose - we are surrounded by vineyards and wineries but ironically, we don't drink wine. But seeing all the roses planted around the perimeter of the vineyards was partly how I got into growing roses a few years ago. I found out that the roses were used as a gauge for vineyard health since roses and grapes have nearly identical growing needs and diseases. Who knew our favorite flower could be so helpful! BethC - I have two more photos of Chris Evert (misspelled her name last time). Depending on the lighting, there is a big difference. I love this rose and hope to buy another. It opens slowly so it lasts long in the garden and in the vase. When the sun hits this flower it really changes the look. Might be more what the catalogs are showing since it's more dramatic....See MoreAnn9BNCalif
