Thanks for posting. Your collection of blooms is one to envy. I particularly like your lipstick plumeria picture. I have 2 lipstick cuttings that have yet to bloom. Their branches are thin compare to the other plumeria cuttings I bought. Do you have a side view picture? I want to see how tall they get before they bloom.

I also have 1 playful and 1 red sparkle. Any one has any picture of these?

I love the desert sunrise, and boy is it blooming it's head off.

Springpaintings: The Lipstick blooms in the picture are from 1 of 2 cuttings I bought from a local person and potted up end of Dec. or in January sometimes. By June they have fully rooted, and 1 of them gave me this nice inflo. The plant is about 2 feet tall (1 ft for the trunk and 1 ft for the tips). And they are thin indeed.
I don't have Playful and Red Sparkle(yet) :-) but have seen somebody's pictures of Red Sparkle and they are beautiful!

Sunseeker53- thanks for the info, all I can do now is wait. Recently the home depots in my area (norther CA) carry plumeria. The tags on my plumerias said C-stars nursery in Southern CA so maybe you can get a few variety there if you visit CA.

Bill-thanks for the picture of playful. I'm looking forward to my plumerias blooming and will definitely take some photos. I have another pink variety (not sure which one) that has an inflo and 1 flower (the other flowers failed to develop...maybe sun-burned or something). Anyways, this 1 flower stay bloomed for 5 days (longer than I expected). Any tips on preventing those black tips on my inflo in the future?

I get the feeling you are one of the few people that lives near me (Bay Area, more specifically Novato) having success at growing Plumeria. I would love to know how you winter your plants. I have not been real successful at growing (or even keeping alive) these beauties and would love any kind of input you can give me.

I just spoke to my favorite nursery owner today and he said that my best option for wintering my tropicals is to put them inside (I have a room downstairs with no real purpose till now!) and turn a heater on. So that's my plan unless you have a better suggestion.

Hi Leslie,
I'm actually in southern Calif, in south Orange County. I've only been growing plumerias since last summer, so I've only gone thru 1 winter with them, where I had most of them in a greenhouse (basically my patio cover, with thick large plastic sheets wrapped on all sides!) I had large xmas lights inside to keep them warm at night.
Since you are in a colder climate and have room inside for your plants in the winter, maybe Andrew on this forum can offer some insights; I know he grows plumerias under lights inside.
Good luck! Plumerias are a little tricky but they really are worth it when they rewards you with the gorgeous flowers and fragrance!

Dang it! I think I may be the only N U T trying to grow Plumeria in the Bay Area! And here I just went out and bought a 6' Mele Matson today! (half price sale at Armstrong, couldn't resist!)

As far as wintering my little collection of worrisome wonders, I was going to do exactly what you did, but use a heater instead - Christmas lights, what a great idea! - but then I figure that room downstairs is just a catchall anyway and it'll give me a reason to clean it up!

Thanks wuvbear! If you are in the San Gabriel Valley, you should have good heat for growing plumerias! They do really well when they get the heat! I'm closer to the coast, where the temperature is normally cooler, but I lucked out in that I am in a little pocket here that does get more sun/heat than most coastal areas, so my plumies are growing well.

leslazz: it's great that you have a room inside to bring your plants in! I am trying to figure out what to do this winter, because my plants have now mostly been transferred to pots (5-gallons) and also the number of them has multiplied drastically (that's really an understatement :-) They won't all fit under the makeshift greenhouse I had last winter! Unless I'm willing to just let them go dormant, but it would be very hard for me to do that because I'm still getting big inflos on my plants and I want them to continue flowering!

I'd just like to add a few more of my August blooms. Hope you enjoy!

Thanks for all these wonderful pictures! You are sooo lucky to be in a warm 'pocket'. Here, my plants are still far behind yours. I wonder if this will be another summer like last year (that just didn't happen). At 1:30 pm it's finally 80F - for the first time in I don't know how long. So please keep posting those pictures, and I can get my fix second hand.
Do you know if Cal. Sunset and Heart's Desire are related? They both seem to have this noticeable indentation at the top of each petal...

Hi Iso! I feel for you about the cool weather you have down there. Hubby and I do drive down that way a lot, and every time we drove down on the 5, it turned overcast once we've pass SJC. But once we went inland from Oceanside, it turned sunny again! You would just have to find the most exposed spot in your yard for your plumies (some spot against a wall, facing west, with no trees in the way).

I don't have Red Sparkle but I've seen it posted here and remember the picture being beautiful. I believe Red sparkle is not a JJ variety.
I'm not sure if Calif sunset and Heart's Desire are related (I've heard that a lot of JJ's plants are seedlings of Penang Peach). Both have the thick petals (with that notch like you said), but I can say that H.D. is not at all a prolific bloomer like Calif. Sunset. Are you going to the plant sale in San diego Labor day weekend? I might be there on the saturday. It would be neat if we can meet!

Hello again sunseeker! Yes, I do have my plants against a south-facing wall with no interfering shade trees, but there just wasn't enough sun during these last few weeks. With hope September and October will be better for us...
I would love to go to the plant sale on Saturday (first thing in the morning), but I'm not sure yet if it will work out. We have friends visiting from Austria and a few things are still up in the air. Let's 'talk' after Wedn. of next week. It would be fun to finally meet, and maybe some other plumie addicts could come down, too. Sure had a good time when we all met in Costa Mesa at the Spring Garden Show at the end of April.

Love the pictures! Laura, I myself bought a Lipstick variety this year from Lowes, it wasn't Jungle Jack but Tropical Treasures variety. Mine hasn't bloomed yet, but the pictures here look like the one on the plant tag (there was a time when I didn't save those, boy have times changed!) Jennifer

Lipstick is a C-Stars variety (their tag say Tropical Treasures). Like Jennifer said, Lowe's carries it - along with other C-Stars varieties.
I have several of this plant, and the 1st one I've bought last summer did bloom but didn't really impress me then (probably because the blooms were smaller). But the blooms this year (in the picture) are actually from a cutting that I've rooted since Dec-january, and I am pretty impressed that it could root and bloom nicely like this within 6-7 months! I think what made the difference is the amount of heat I get this year. It is definitely a keeper, the color really stands out in the garden!
