I'm ripping extra volunteer seedlings out of my garden and I'd hate to see them go to waste. I have angelica, mugwort, elecampane, marshmallow, ginger mint, some iris, herb bennet, a ton of valerian and catnip and oregano. All are hardy to zone 4 - I'm in a cold pocket at 1000 feet with nasty winters, and they all make it every year. (I'm an herbalist and yes, I can tell you what they're good for.) Want an instant herb garden? While they are free, if you've got any herbs or flowers you'd like to bring by and trade, that would be wonderful and much appreciated. Check on craigslist or freecycle - there's frequently plants available through these sources. But there's also a timing factor involved.......late June is NOT an ideal time to be digging/dividing or transplanting plants and you can easily risk transplant shock by doing so. And that can be pretty discouraging to a new gardener to start out with stressed/failing plants. You'd have better luck if you waited until fall. You could take the time now to do some research into the type of plants you think you might like to try and/or improve your soil and planting areas in preparation. And it's not too late to try some fast growing annuals, like sunflowers, from seed.
