Favorite top-load washer with allergen or sanitary setting?
Comments (6)Currently, the NSF home page only lists four manufacturers as having sanitizing TL washers: GE, LG, Samsung and Whirlpool/Maytag. LG WaveForce, GE and Kenmore Elite are all basically the same unit. GE states that their Sani cycle goes up to 140F. The same might actually also be true for the other two models, esp. since gates1 said his WaveForce doesn't hit 160 as claimed. Whirlpool and Maytag heat up to 120F, unless the cycle was changed. The key for their cycles is to add an oxy product to achieve sanitation performance, hence the cycle's name Sanitary with Oxi. Samsung's Sanitary cycle went up to 120F, too - according to washerdryerinfo.org. Allergene cycles on top loaders (I think that's Whirlpool only?) don't heat all that high but rather use several deep fills (like a deep-water wash and rinse) to flush out stuff. Dryers can sanitize, too, basically over-drying lauundry on a high heat setting. Alex...See MoreSanitizing The Cart Handle ??? (pics)
Comments (53)I understand what you're saying about letting some germs in... and that all makes sense.... BUT.... In this day-and-age when there is so much contact between so many people, sickness -- and infections -- can spread rapidly. A friend's sister (with whom she has no contact -- by choice) has just been diagnosed as being a Staph Carrier, and has some sort of Staph infection that is dormant in her, but can be passed to others. I just think that trying to keep from getting all those germs from soooo many unknown people in a public place is wise. And, yes, wash, wash, wash... especially after using all that dirty lucre. ;^)...See MoreElectrolux 70s washer/dryer turning clothes grey on sanitize cycle
Comments (21)Sabrown72... I understand you've done this practice (not sorting) your whole life but with your brand new high efficiency machine there is a learning curve. If you had a traditional top loader before you could get away with mixing as there was a ton of water to help suspend color transfer (plus your old washer never got as hot as the Sanitary cycle reaching over 150F). With so little water in "he" machines you're concentrating color dye as well as soils (dirt and body oils). Be sure to use a detergent for what you're washing. There are detergents geared for whites and detergents geared for colors and they really do help keep whites white and colors bright with less fading but you need to separate the two loads at minimum between colors and whites. Whites can withstand hot hot washes where colors will benefit with warm. I don't recommend cold/cool (unless your cleaning a blood stain or protein based stain), as cold/cool doesn't loosen body oils trapped in clothes fibers. For me the learning cure was dosing detergents and bleach with my Electrolux. I have soft water and only need 2 Tablespoons (3 for huge load) of detergent. There should be no suds visible, just bubbles. Only a 1/4 to 3/4 cup of bleach is needed. If you don't use liquid bleach you can substitute with an "Oxi" type bleach (only use on whites). I love my Electrolux and hope you enjoy it too....See MoreIs allergen cycle a thing of the past?
Comments (14)>>>"not happy with the closeted top loaders in the house we recently renovated * * * the “laundry room” here is a bathroom closet — tucked under the staircase ..."<<< I kind of recall you describing this closet in another post, but I'm sorry that I can't recall what it was. Is the situation that the closet has enough space to fit a full size washer but no dryer? Or it is just deep enough or a tall enough to fit a unitized "laundry centers" (front load with a stacked dryer) but not tall enough to fit a full size vertical stack like the Speed Queen stack? Could you fit stacked compact FL units? Besides the Electrolux EFLS210 compact washer that I mentioned previously, there also is the Bosch 300 (WAT28400uc) which has a designated allergy program, cycle, extra rinse options, and fits in very tight spaces. In the next Bosch model up, the 500 series (WAT28401uc), the allergy cycle is subsumed by the much hotter (170°F) sanitize cycle as well as the ability to provide "extra hot" washes and extra rinses in many cycles. Rococogurl has some detailed posts about her experience with the 500 washer and condenser dryer, and those would be worth checking out if considering a compact FL washer....See MorePawprint
