Mine is something I saw on Wednesday. It's a contrail with a shadow (I didn't even know that was possible) and a sundog!

Jim, could be King Neptune. I looked at some pictures of him, and he didn't have horns but sometimes had a crown or something sticking up from his head. He needs to lose that belly fat.

Eclipse of the Moon

Beginning of the eclipse: Earth's shadow has started its transit across the moon. Note that the edge of the shadow is not sharp, but diffused. One may speculate why this is. I'm no astronomer, but my guess is that earth's atmosphere is not sharp or consistent with height. Its full of clouds and thermal currents. Also, it is most dense at earth's surface and thins with altitude.

This photo was made without a telescope. It was a digital camera alone mounted on a tripod and the effective speed set at 800 ASA. I had a problem with tripping the shutter without moving the camera. Most of my shots suffered camera movement. A release cable would have been very helpful.

Blood Moon

As the eclipse of the moon approaches totality, the "blood" moon appears. The reddish color is caused by bending of light rays passing through earth's atmosphere, The red end of the visible spectrum gets bent more than the shorter wavelength, blue end. Red rays bending around the edge of the earth illuminates the moon's surface behind the edge of the eclipse.

The same effect causes the sun to appear more red at sunset. When this color shift happens, the sun is actually below the horizon and what we see is the red end of the spectrum bending while passing through the atmosphere.
