Comments (3)I think cork is ideal for kitchens. I have, and love, my wood which goes throughout the house. Tile is much too hard on the cook, and anything that drops (it wasn't just the shattering, it was the shattering and spreading over a large area that I hated). If there aren't a lot of square feet, the price difference of materials won't matter much. Enjoy choosing something of high quality, beauty, and comfort!...See MoreDesperately Seeking Suggestions for a back splash
Comments (17)I'm the party pooper, I guess. I suggest you do not pick the tile for the back splash until the cabinets and counters are in. You will not believe the difference it makes. When the counter is horizontal and bigger, it will look much more different than that little sample. The lighting in your space is different than out in the tile shops. Also the cabinets when installed will give your space a different look. There is nothing lost by waiting. There have been several GW members who made their decision based on a door and granite sample only to be disappointed later. In our future house, I plan on just painting that drywall area and then deciding. I know I probably will want to go with the arabesques again, but I really want to see it before making that decision. But, while you are out there looking, check out the Mandala Tiles, especially their Sinu collection. The tile is subtle but really does have some depth to it without stealing the show. I know srg215 used it in her kitchen in the color: Stingray. Gorgeous. Good Luck!...See MoreSeeking Siding Suggestions!!
Comments (7)I like that dormer, it creates a quirky charm! You are right about the double 4 or 5 inch panels. I had the same dilemma when I had to replace my 7.5" aluminum siding. I ended up with double 6" and the look of it pleases me. PlyGem makes both 7" insulated in 21 colors and double 6" insulated in 16 colors, plus a variety of other models (non insulated, beaded, cedar shingle etc) from 6" to 7". Georgia Pacific makes a 6" insulated vinyl panel; CertainTeed offers a 6" beaded (might not be a detail that you want, but take a look) and also a 7" vinyl "shingle" look which I think would not be out of place on your house. I found these on a quick Bing search. Availability in Canada is a question I can't answer, though. Painting the 8" is certainly possible, but I believe repainting would be needed after 10 years, more or less. You'd have to check with Sherwin Williams on that. Ask around a bit more about the cement based siding, unless it is out of your budget. It could be that your contractor just isn't well versed in its installation (I understand that it is much more work to install, also)...See MoreSeeking Exterior Color Suggestions
Comments (32)If it were me, I'd use the same color for the house and the garage so they look like they belong together and visual attention is not drawn away from the house Example: A log house in our neighborhood had a garage of another material and was painted a different color. They never seemed to belong together UNTIL the garage was painted to match the colors of the logs and trim. Now they seem to belong together. If you like the red, add it is a pop on the front door. so the eye is drawn to the house rather than to the garage. You could also incorporate splashes of red in plants and yard art, concentrating on the front door area.. Trees will be fine. Once they grow, trim the lower branches and the house will be visible through the trunks. (Make sure to choose wisely. You don't want understory trees that will hide the house when mature; and plant them far enough from the house so roots don't disturb the foundation and branches don't hang over the roof... (20-30 ft depending on the type of tree and the natural mature size of it's canopy). You could also plant them so a visual line of sight remains to the front door, maybe with a nice decorative walkway to pull the eye to the front door... so the tree trunks will come to frame the picture rather than covering it up....See Moreredfoxco
