winter protection from broken branches on dwarf spruce

Last winter my baby Picea glauca globosa sufferred a few broken branches from heavy snow. We had extreme amounts of snow (multiple feet per week!), plus snow roof clearing was ongoing and the spruce was right in the target area.

Fortunately, I was able to tie the branches in the spring and it seems that everything mended. I will remove the ties next spring.

But for this upcoming winter, I am thinking of putting on an A-frame something or other to minimize damage. I have 2 unused grid-style trellises that I was thinking of. But I'm not sure if that will do any good. Of course, the snow will still get through. Maybe line them with hardware cloth? I can add more strips to make the grids smaller.

But if the a-frame is completely closed a la plywood to really protect it, it seems it would block too much light - and probably be ugly too. I suppose snow blocks light too.

Any suggestions or ideas?
